Basenjis and small fury or feathered things

Basenji Talk
  • My girl of 14 years old loves to try and eat the possum that visits on her balcony sometimes.

She has relented to the cockatoos and lorrikeets that come down.

  • I think one reason that no one has reponded here yet is that probably few of us have possums that visit nor cockatoos or whatever the last bird is unless they are already in a cage in the house! Sorry! My equivalent might be the enormous black birds that dot the neighborhood yards. They are the size of cats! We have lots of squirrels too that are basenji favorites here in the states.

  • Hollie will chase anything that runs from her… squirrels and rabbits are a favorite. She wanted to chase deer when she saw them too, good thing she was leashed. I don't think she has ever seen a possum but she could where we live... most of them are already dead on the road by the time we see them. Raccoons are a possiblity here too and bears in the mountains. We do not want to see a bear... Hollie would be a good snack for it!

  • Yeah…we used to have bunnies in our yard....used to, before the dogs killed them :( Then the smarter ones figured, not a great place to have a family. Also we used to have squirrels on our property, but not so much anymore. We were seriously wondering if there was some sort of squirrel plague going on...we don't even have any visiting our bird feeders in the non-dog part of the yard. We thought maybe the presence of the dogs had just convinced them to live in somebody else's yard.....

Our main problem is in the spring and summer when the baby birds fledge from the nest. Our dogs stake out the nest for weeks; they have learned at some point a helpless little morsel will hop out of the nest; then I have to listen for the sounds of a terrified baby bird, dogs snarking at each other; get out there get the dogs corralled and rescue the bird!!!

  • In the apartment we lived in when I got Nicky we had a late night visit by a possum. Nicky went nuts. Sam thought he needed to go out opened the front door and there was the possum. Nicky was ready to chase. Sam just closed the door and then tried to distract Nicky with some food.
Later when we moved to a duplex and had also added Rally to the family we a whole possum family that would tease the dogs through the huge picture window. They would sit out there or run along the fence. It drove the dogs nuts.

  • Yonae12, I see that you live in Florida now. Are the animals you mentioned in Florida or Sydney? I guess there are possums around these parts, but haven't seen them alive for a long time!

Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

Charlie D. and I took our 2 adult Bs, our first Bs, to training classes in the 90s. The dogs reluctantly passed but it was suggested that we retake the classes. The stay was the hardest command! One B had a high prey drive and wanted to go after the small white fluffy dogs and the other one was so friendly and had a thing for larger dogs that he would sit in the ring and turn his head around to watch the large dogs in the other ring. Once the teacher had to come up and wave her hand in front of his face to distract him! I think he wanted to be a large dog. He later earned his CGC although was told he was too friendly and both became excellent lure coursers with titles. We never did retake the training classes. I do not think I could take the embarassment! Jennifer

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
