@gianna said in Looking for a female pup: as far as i can afford to go... I think @zande was asking what distance you would be willing to travel.... 10km? 800km?

Thanks for the feedback. I will be starting my search with suggested breeders in VA first but am totally open to looking anywhere east of the Mississippi. I don't mind a drive and prefer to meet the breeder, dogs and see environment dogs have been raised in. I hope the breeder would want to meet me to confirm their screening decision to entrust me with the lifetime care of one of their dogs. As for looking outside of the US, I don't see that as an option for me at this time. Canada border restrictions have been extended and quite frankly I don't see that changing considering the rapidly increasing case numbers in the US. Having been stationed Korea and Germany, I have flown with my dogs before. Even under the best conditions, it is stressful on a dog. Ground temperature restrictions, flight delays or cancellations, layovers, switching planes.....I was there in case a problem were to arise. Under the right conditions and circumstances, I could see flying a pup/dog unaccompanied cargo on a short direct flight but that would be because the breeder and I had a longstanding relationship.

@helle-devi Thank you for responding. I have already been in touch with the basenji sisters. I was not aware before I contacted them that they are located in CA. I think the distance between us is too great. If things didn’t work out between my basenji and one of their girls, the distance would be a problem. I did become a member on the Facebook site that you recommended. Thank you so much! I was unaware that such a site existed. Jo Ann

Glad you got your dog! I looked for a thread on her but didn't see it. Please be sure to get her Fanconi tested (NOT the strip tests, but the actual Fanconi DNA test) as soon as possible if she is not already tested. BRAT strip tests but does not DNA and sometimes people get confused and think a clear strop means no Fanconi. Only by doing the DNA will you know.

Well said, Patty!!! I love your stories. I always just say that Cody never read his canine instruction manual. I have never thought of his mischief as doing his chores, but yep, that seems to be exactly what he's doing :) "Hey girl, you dropped a sock. I'll just take it into the hallway so you don't trip over it. Hmm, it chews almost as nicely as my defluffed squirrel… hey, don't take it! I was just trying help you out!"

It is not true that all puppymill pups go to petstores. If the USDA breeder is unable to sell all their pups to the dealer/broker due to a lack of demand or a defect where the dealer does not accept them, the breeder will sell online either on a site like puppyfind.com or its own website. If the breeder/dealer does not want to sell their pups via the internet, they can sell them at a dog auction. Here is the biggest dog auction http://www.swkennelauction.com/ and the other one is http://heartlandsale.com/index.html Heartland Sales usually has a lot of older pups for sale as compared to breeding dogs. SW Kennel Auction has been having a lot of dispersal sales this fall season. SW Kennel Auction is weekly from early September to early June and Heartland Sales is about once a month, I believe year round. The best thing to do is to look up the breeder name on the USDA website and see if they are USDA licensed. The breeder could be either licensed as a breeder or a dealer. A dealer can be a breeder who can sell their own pups to a petstore or another breeder's pups to a petstore. The largest USDA dealer is The Hunte Corp. who sells the majority of pets to petstores. Here is the website: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare/pubs_reports.shtml Look under reports which is down near the bottom of the page and click on ?List of Active Licensees and Registered Facilities. You can also look at the inspection reports for all USDA licensed facilities at ?Inspection Reports which is also under reports. Jennifer
