    My 5 year old Basenji (we have had her since March) goes to the bathroom on our deck. We put her out the back door onto our deck and she usually goes no further tan the deck to go to the bathroom. Is there any way that I can stop this from happening?

    Have you tried walking her to the location you want her to go potty at?? They usually respond to consistency. If you walk her over on a leash to the place where you want them to go they'll get used to that each time & look for their scent to "go" where they should.

    Put her on a leash and walk her to where you want her to go every time. Praise her when she goes, then let her off her least to run around.

    I have never placed a puppy in an apartment. Not particularly by design but it just panned out that way. Even the relatively high percentage I have exported have gone to houses with gardens of some kind and access to lots of exercise. Many of these myths have only really gotten a toe hold since FaceBook and social media generally. I had one potential owner visit a few times before deciding, yes, her allergies did not extend to Basenjis. She had three pups from me over a span of about 15 years before being an established and successful breeder herself. @rhughes89 Well done for wanting to persevere. I am sure that, with the will and the right mind-set, you will prevail !

    I have "Intelligence" cubes and balls which you put kibble in and the dog has to figure out how, by rolling them around, to make the kibble fall out. But no 'extra' rations !!! Only some kibble from the daily allowance goes into them. I am such a mean Mom but my pack stays svelte !šŸ˜

    I agree with all the previous comments and would also suggest that perhaps for the first few days to try to block off your hallway so she cannot access it. Itā€™s probably inconvenient for you, but I think it would help her get the message and break her habit while you try to get rid of the odor. My 10.5 yo basenji also has bowel issues (he was never officially diagnosed with any condition) and he has been on an extremely restricted diet for nearly his whole life. When he was younger one rainy winter he started pooping downstairs bc he hates getting wet. We blocked off the stairs while we thoroughly cleaned the area that was very effective. Another suggestion I have if your dog loves food is to use her special kibble as treats. It works v well for us. Good luck!

    @tanza: Well, seems that "he" Nemo is not following the "normal" thinkingā€¦ remember this pup has come into his home and "taken" over his space.... so you have some adjusting to do... you need to just step back... and make sure that he is secure.. and it takes time... and you need to make exceptions to what would be the normal... try different things.. and remember as each day passes... Nemo will understand this girl is "not" leaving....ggg Not the best answer to your questions... but we have all been there... done that.... it is like a game of chance Thanks, Tanza. I think I probably knew the answer should beā€¦"stay out of it". I'm sure it's usually the owner who needs the "behavioral adjustment" and not the dogs 9 times out of 10. :rolleyes: I'm pretty good now at not interfering with them than when I first got her, particularly if Zoni is pestering Nemo. I just need to remind myself not to interfere when he is pestering her. @lvoss: If she is sleeping in the crate, shut the door. You don't necesarily have to lock it that way she can open it and leave but he might be deterred from pestering her. Thanks. I'll give it a try, that might help.

    WOW!!!..Words to live by!! I commend you for all the effort it sounds like you've put into your dogs. I wish people were more like youā€¦and your mantra should be placed on every B owner's refrigerator door :D :D It's all about knowing your dog & KNOWING their limitations. Respect is key and so is a no tolerance policy. At least that's how it is at our house! :) BTW-I went to a Basenji Fun Match...and A LOT of B's are bitchy snarky little fur balls. Rest assured yours are not the exception. Mine are exactly the same way but we work with them every day on this!

And you'll make some great friends! And you'll learn how to teach your dog by DOING. The Aussies I've met are great dogs. They're smart. But they have to to have a job. When you take a walk, have Angel carry a bottle of water for you and her in a small saddlebag. Clicker training is also a good way to teach. It worked miracles with my Chaco. Good Luck and let us know how the training goes. Basenjis CAN be good performance dogs. It just takes patience. Chaco has his CD and RN and is working on agility now.
