Beginner Question

Basenji Training
  • Is there a simplified type of lure course that we can tryout with our boys? They seem to really love chasing low fast things. We have a lot of property to work with. I just did not know if there is a course that can be set up without motors, etc.

  • I was told to get a fishing pole and attach a white bag to the line and drag it along the yard, Basenjis will chase it, and occasionally let them catch it. Also I understand that playing fetch also helps to get them interested in going after something. We tried Lure Coursing for the first time last month, my Basenji is 1 yr. 5 mos. and she really liked it. She did really good for the first time, she had fun watching the other dogs as well, plus it is good for socializing, adults as well as dogs. Sahara loves to play fetch so it makes me think it helped.

Well, that was a bust, turns out the course wasn't fully enclosed alone, too many other dogs to even pay attention. She did have a blast with all the other happy dogs! So it was still a fun outing!

I have never had a problem with potty training or crate training… so I disagree with your assessment. Might be true for your Basenjis, but not for mine or any of my pups that were placed. Potty training was the easiest.... Depends on the Basenji... each one is different...

@ohbassit: So the Vet gave her the seal of approval. She did say that everything seems to be in order and her hips are fine. I definately think that it was a case of her being bored. We have switched things up and she knows now that once she does her business a few times the rest of the walk is for her. I try and keep the walk limited at 45 minutes to an hour since if I gave her free reign to sniff and say hello to everybody (people, dogs, cats, squirrels) we would be out there for awhile. While your Vet might have given her "HIPS" the seal of approval… unless they are x-rayed and viewed by a board certified Othopedic vet.. you really would not know if there is a problem with hips....

he's got a crate, and sleeps in it from time-to-time. as far as accidents go, he's had a couple. i bought puppy floor pads, and hes used them once, but never again. :( luckily i see that once he eats, whatever form thelast time he ate comes out, so i can time when to take him out. another thing – he doesnt eat his food! he always eating the cat food, and wont eat unless i sit on the floor with him, and hand feed him a few kibbles until he's like "hmm this isnt so bad" and finishes the bowl. & it's weird because im feeding him the same stuff his last woner did,. so its not like i completely changed his food.. :(
