Male or female basenji?

    My husband and I are planning on getting a basenji puppy, but I was hoping to get a bit of advice from the many experts here. I've read that two males and two females are more likely to fight than a male and a female. My husband's parents have a male Australian shepherd and his sister has a male golden. We will be living within a couple of hours of each family, so while it won't be a daily or weekly thing, our pup will likely spend time with the other two dogs, who do get along well.

    Should we definitely be looking for a female basenji? Does it really matter? What would you recommend?

    Welcome to the forum. Dogs living together are more likely to fight, and making sure your pup spends time with the other 2 regularly so they bond early will help. But I'd suggest a female. All around, both for your basenji and particularly for the Australian shepherd (who can also be testy with other dogs), it's probably your safer bet.

    Where are you getting your puppy from? You might find relatives on the board. :)

    Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

    Wouldn't feel bad about the behavior of your basenji. I got mine six years ago and he acts a lot like yours. I kennel trained him and when I have company he goes in the kennel till he settles down. When I let him out I just tell people to be still till he checks them all out then he is fine. A lot of times he acts like he is going to attack me if he doesn't get his way vicious snarls and all, but I have learned it is just that an act . He also acted vicious around other dogs but after introducing them properly he gets along great. We have recently got him a new basenji mixed sister to play with, after the snarls and viciousness he loves her very much. I wouldn't be afraid to rehome your basenji, it at least give someone a chance to see what they can do.

    Always say, opposites are best... are these littermates? Even with opposites, many times littermates are a problem... as they competed as babies for everything.... and we say, it works till it doesn't... Is there a reason you want two of the same sex? and you need to be prepared that if they don't get along you will need to separate... I was very lucky but very concerned about the two bitches I got at the same time, 2wks in age apart... I looked at the temperament of both before deciding... and LUCKED out... I have one very confident bitch and one not.. but they have meshed well together with the confident bitch not concerned with being "top" in the house, she knows she is but doesn't need to prove it.... still it took till my one bitch had puppies to prove to me that she was OK in her skin and have remained friends since... even with her puppies. IMO (in my opinion) unless you are looking to breed at some point, not worth the chance... been the other route too... and it is NOT fun

    I had a male Basenji that peed like a horse until the day he died at 15 and a half. No matter where he was. And it was kinda nice having a male that wouldn't hike his leg to piss all over things, never marked anything either. Don't complain if your boy doesn't hike to pee. On the other hand, I had 2 Siberian Husky bitches who were TERRIBLE markers, always tried to get it as high as they could. They were both spayed too. One passed away a few years ago, still have the other, and she never marks anymore. -Joanne

    well then, gender aside, get a dog you feel comfortable with, I went into a house full of boy dogs and only one girl, my Bindi, who was taking them down and being really playful but getting her point across, like have only older brothers to look up to, the younger sister will try her hardest to be as big and bad as her older brothers :3 I think it's cute and endearing <3 I think that's why I liked Bindi, she's got spunk! ~Kat
