Welcoming Tiki to our family

Show Off Your Dog
  • Hi everyone!

We're so excited to introduce you to our second basenji - Tiki ! He's a tri male and is about 11/12 weeks old now. Just picked him up last weekend from Cindy at Fly'N High Basenji's in Texas.

He's an absolute doll - so fun, snuggly, curious, friendly, BOLD…. and wants everything that Hana has - or is about.

Hana is our 3 yr old brindle female who is our first basenji who we just love tremendously. She's so amazing we just had to have another.... ;) I know most of you here know exactly what we're talking about !! She is VERY curious about him.... follows him everywhere and is very tolerant of his antics - the bone stealing, leg nipping, being jumped on top of, ear biting.... you name it, he does it with gusto. She has been very gentle but will give him a warning growl when impinging on her personal space... OFTEN. ;) They are starting to play together reciprocally now and will take turns chasing each other wildly, play biting, leaping onto each other... and then going to their different 'safe zones' for a break. (hers: on top of the ottoman where we can't to - and his: under the side table or footstool)

We have caught them chewing the ends of a rawhide -- each on the other's end together !! (like Lady and the Tramp) :) The most amazing thing we watched so far - was Hana being impatient herself to play with him. He was in his bed and she'd try to lightly pull on his paws or leg to taunt him out of bed. Then... she brought over her prized pink blanket and shook it over him to tempt him to grab it! So fun !!!

It's only been a week and they will need time to figure out their lives together in this house but we're so thrilled and grateful for Tiki to join our family !!

  • Adorable! So jealous (puppy fever all over again). Enjoy

  • Awww too cute, I hear that having two (or three) is absolutely a joy. Such antics they [you] will have!

  • Thank you so much - yes we will !! As soon as I heard our breeder had puppies… and saw the photos... that was IT. Instant love. Basenji puppy photos are dangerous..... !! ;)

  • They are indeed. He is so cute and Hana, (not to leave her out!) is a lovely girl with beautiful eyes!

  • They are adorable. That's great that they are getting on so well, watching them snuggle and play will become a favorite past time ;)

  • :D Playing is great… snuggling is not happening yet.... more like wrestling and hip checking with play nips in between. Fingers crossed that they eventually start cuddling up together and grooming each other.... !! That would be so sweet. I'm sure it's different when the B's aren't siblings, takes longer I'm sure. Perhaps when Tiki is out of puppy stage of constantly nipping at her. ;)

  • Oh you are so lucky, I'm very jealous. Never a boring moment for you now, keep that camera handy so we get to see some adorable moments. Enjoy your full house of mischief.

  • It took our two a little less than 2 weeks or so until Kaia was really cuddling up to Loki. Of course, as the girl she was determined to get her way no matter what! I think it took about a month until he started to groom her, which he still does now and almost a year for her to start grooming him which doesn't happen too often. I'm pretty sure she thinks that she's the princess and should be pampered, not doing the pampering. Definitely keep a camera nearby, it's always when I don't have one that I need it the most.

@katoman Hey, you should really try to relax some! You jump to the defensive all the time!! This is a forum......it's for everyone to voice their opinion!! You're not on trial here! It's really pretty interesting when a bunch of people start voicing their idea's & opinions! You're not going to get sue'd because you bred your dogs (at least not by any of us & doubtfully by the folks who bought the pups!). I bet there's a happy guy in there some where ~ let him out for awhile! Okay? It's easy to get along with most everyone here!!

@Kipawa: Jess, I don't think Maya has a problem with weight, either light or too heavy. She looks very good. As long as you know she is eating wel, is healthy and is exercising, don't be too concerned. I realize their IS a standard for the basenji, but they are living beings that can't always match up to a picture in a book. She is a very, very good eater. She LOVES her food and its often more of a problem to keep her weight down as she will steal anything she can get hold of  Since having a basenji I have learned that they are worse thievess even than labradors!! I was defrosting a chicken last week and noticed it had disappeared from the kitchen worktop.. where do i find it? Outside with Maya and she'd eaten about half of it  She is a pig!! I walk her for about 2 hours a day now, most of which is offlead running (we walk to the horses fields and back each evening so she spends a good hour running around the fields and woods and farmland!) so she has quite a lot of exercise compared to some im sure, but if she didnt have that she would be a little porker cos she eats a lot :p But at the same time, cos she has so much time running around burning calories I do need to make sure her food intake is high enough. She is definately the highest energy dog i've ever had
