Admittedly Odd Puppy Food Question

Basenji Feeding
  • Fromms is all I feed and I love it, the cold certainly could be the culprit but truthfully it is already vacuum sealed and so the kibble a are already a bit compressed in the bag. Vent it and let it sit for the day.

  • I have never seen Fromm's in a vacuum sealed package? The ones that I get are in regular bags? Is this something new they are doing?

  • I may have found the problem. When I looked closely, I saw pinpricks in the back of the bag, and it looks like the bottom of the box has gotten wet, then dried, in transit. So maybe moisture intruded the bag? I've never seen vacuum sealed dog food do like this, so something's off. Fromm's said not to use it, so I'm going to swap it out. The Nature's Miracle leaked all over stuff in another box, so the shipping gods are not with me this week. :)

    Thanks for the feedback!

  • Oof, I'd return the order…

  • I know, right– you try to be organized and ready, then it's back to square one because everything arrives damaged! Ah, well, back it all goes...

  • I feed Fromm's dry food and it's never come in a vacuumed sealed bag?

  • The smallest bags, grain free are what I feed and I swear they are.

  • This is my first experience with the Fromm brand, but the bags are sealed. The valve is on the side.

Fromm’s email said extreme changes in temperature and atmospheric pressure could have caused air to build up in the bag, then it was completely expelled through the one-way valve during palletization and transport. Solid Gold has hermetically-sealed bags, so I’m used to the sealing, but this looks way different. The valve could have been damaged, so Fromm’s said to send it back.

I wish I could just buy the food locally, but it’s special order and would take three weeks to get it in!!!

  • @Chealsie508:

The smallest bags, grain free are what I feed and I swear they are.

ahhh that is why…..you are correct the small grain free version is vacuum sealed but all the regular versions are not :)

  • Pamela, have you been owned by another dog??? Just wondering!

  • Not quite yet, Chealsie, but soon! The breeder is still people matching, so I'm waiting to hear. I have everything but the puppy… and now, the food.

I'll introduce him when I know who he is. The suspense is killing me! :)

  • I'm so incredibly happy for you! You, more than anyone I've "met" is the most deserving, you've had a hard road with Spencer and I know he is pushing for you and this. He is going to be one very lucky pup.

    A major Congratulations!!

  • Thanks, Chealsie– that's so kind of you! It has been bittersweet on many levels. But new year, new beginnings...

Now I get to relive crate training!

  • Congrats on your "pending" puppy…. who are you getting your puppy from?....

  • Thank you! He is coming from Tad Brooks, though I'm not sure which litter. Bella, Rain and Dara have puppies.

I believe he will have "cousins" on this forum?

  • I don't think they come vacuum packed. O.o I ordered mine and got it last week and I don't remember thinking it was a brick!

I'm actually really happy to know that a lot of the Senji parents here feed theirs Fromm. I literally switched to Fromm a few days ago because I was having trouble getting my picky eater to eat! I've tried everything! She's eating the Fromm food, even finishing her bowls at all her meal times. So I'm guessing this is good stuff. :)

Yes he will! We are getting a Meisterhaus puppy this month too, as are friends of ours who already have a boy from Tad. I can't wait to find out who our puppy will be and from which litter.

  • My litter that I bred this year was sired by one of Tad's boys …. so we have lots of relations here..... they are 6wks old today (tonight)

  • You must be so thrilled and eagerly anticipating the decision on who will be yours! A puppy is going to be so great for you, and ps…house training is still house training no matter how many years later, lol!!

Can't wait to hear stories and posts and most importantly PICTURES!!

Pat ( 6 weeks already!) time really flies, any prospects you're looking to keep?

  • Thanks so much, everyone! The puppy is coming home next week, and I will be so excited to get him. It's great to know he will have cousins and possibly littermates on here. TMartin, I'm so excited for you! When do you pick up your puppy?

And Pat, if my puppy or TMartin's puppy are from Rain's litter, they could be your puppies' half-brother. Your pups are adorable– I've been watching them grow on Facebook. LOVE the tris!

Chealsie... ah, house training-- I remember it well. I hope this puppy takes to his crate better than Spencer did. Spencer wanted nothing to do with a crate... ever! That was the only thing he really rebelled against. Thank goodness he wasn't house destructive. He had access to the entire house and seldom bothered a thing. So I'm hoping my luck holds. LOL!

I was feeding my Basenji brand blue and she started getting crystals in her kidneys. With the recommendation from my pet store owner (Pet Ranch), switched to Nature's Variety Instinct RAW. Withing 2 months…all crystals are gone. Now Basenji, Rotty, and Puppy Mastiff/Pitt all get Nature's Variety. Their coats are very shiney and teeth are so white.

I once had a pup under treatment at the Bristol Veterinary hospital. When they finally sorted the problem I was told now you'll be able to give him real food meaning kibble!1 I always feed raw and whatever but never complete dog food. Having said that it seems that over here we get a new dog food manufactutrer every month and all claim that theirs is the best!!

@agilebasenji: If you and your vet are happy with their weight, I would not change the amount you're feeding them. However, my pups need more calories in the winter to maintain their weight. Treats - my pups love sweet potatoes and raw (or cooked) zucchinis. sometimes dogs like green beans or carrots. at my house, tri-ing is really bad about taking the carrots, chewing them up and spitting them out all over the place. Yea, thanks Jet. Otherwise, they also like cheese, waffles, eggs, etc, but given you pup's allergies, you may not want to try the later. LOL…. leave it to the "Tri-ing" to make a mess out of the carrots!!!!

@Varanus: So I have Yoshi on Canidae All Life Stages right now, and I don't think it's the food for him. He's doing better on it than on the lower-meat-content Three Dog Bakery food I was using, but it isn't making him as happy and healthy as it could. For various reasons, I don't think I can do a raw diet right now, so I'm interested in kibble recommendations. I'm willing to spend money to get good food for him to thrive on, but I'm also not made of cash. Recommendations? B's are funny about there food, I only feed dry food and use Wellness brand, which has been good for my B's, Try a newpaper under the bowl so it wond shift around, that may help. If he hungry enough he will eventually eat. Good luck.

I agree with Pat regarding the coat. It is very common for reds to be "washed out" when they loose their coat. It unusally returns. But if he is doing well on the food, don't change it. The old saying, don't break what not broken.

@sharronhurlbut: I am a big supporter of the local humane society. They have found even when they offer $$ to have the folks bring back puppies/kittens to have them fixed, most don't do it. The only way they can prevent more dogs/cats in getting the animal fixed before it leaves the shelter. I a perfect world, this wouldn't be needed…but as lots of folks are not going to be bothered to have the surgerys done, this is the only way they can be sure... I am speaking of a all breed humane society. I do see their point... :D great minds think alike. I think we posted these two messages {about people not taking advantage of the reduced/free surgery} w/in seconds of one another. {we share the same local Humane Society}. I agree; I see their point completely.
