    Hi,
    I am new to Basenji's but can read here I am in for a lot of fun.

    I just got a mix with a lot of Basenji in her, the vet tells me she is 2-3 years old. (Stray dog)

    She is VERY well behaved, quite, potty trained, and so on. Look like she either got lost from her original owner or she got left somewhere.

    So here is my questions:
    I read she need lot of exercise and love to play - and at the same time I read do NOT let her of her leach because she will run away.

    I do love to run myself but am not sure I can run with her every day and would love to play ball/fetch or other games with her.. How does this work if I always have to be afraid of her running away. I do not have a fenced area for us to go to..

    One strategy if you have a large area that is unfenced is to use a drag rope, so you can get hold of her if necessary. Good training tool as well. Biking is a good way to give lots of exercise in a short period of time. I have done this with a couple of mine. Some Basenjis and for sure some mixes may be temperamentally better suited for off leash than others, but tread carefully until you are sure yours is one of them.

    With her being 2-3 years old she should have no problem with you on a run. I am not sure how far you run every day but I would take her with you and see how she does. We once took our female B on a 22 km hike, she was a tired puppy after that one and the day after the hike too! Good luck with the Fetching game…..my B's do not really like to fetch, and will only bring back the toy if they really feel like it.

    @elbrant Yes - over here, humidity is normally very high, so it is a prickly, not a dry heat.

    Kelli…I think you're right about the altered gait...I worried about that as well just because of how both my b's walk with just a coat or sweater on, so I've never tried booties. Obviously they are uncomfortable with clothing, so consequently I stopped trying to get them to wear them for that very reason...I was afraid they would learn to walk differently. I even went so far as to have $150 custom sweater knit (with hand painted yarn) for Ruby that was made specifically to all her measurements. Looks cute & fits her to a "t", but she won't walk in it. Good thing I didn't opt for the cashmere. :rolleyes: I'm thinking I'll donate it to Pam & Sheila...maybe it can go home with one of Ruby's grand kids. It would look stunning on a black & white b because it is so colourful. Oh, and I will say, that the kids LOVE it when I put Musher's Secret on their paws...they act like they are getting a spa treatment.:D Brando even lets out contented sighs while I'm rubbing it in. :D Anyway, I know my b's and I KNOW that the boots would be torn to shreds in about 2 seconds...given how they've tried to get the coat/sweater when they are on.

    Mine do not usually make such a mess. My boy will chew and unstuff some types of doggie beds and he is the one that opens the cabinets and drawers. The girls enjoy emptying the cabinets and drawers that the boy opens. Even if we didn't have the safety locks it is not an every day behavior, usually it is an "I'm bored", behavior.

    Execercise is good for all of us..laugh, me saying this, typing in front of the computer instead of walking… Ok, I will walk tomorrow, with the b's!

    WOW what a story…I am so glad your B's health returned...thanks for the important info..my husband and I have an RV and we were just talking about taking our B on a little camping trip...thanks again...
