First lure coursing event

Basenji Training
  • A small brag - our 2 1/2 yr old "Dude" went to his first lure coursing event this last weekend - he had never even seen one. In 2 days, he earned his JC and qualifying scores in his first trial!
Big thank you to Joel Brody for encouraging us to try coursing with Dude and for releasing him in the trial when I was too nervous! (My last coursing dog is now almost 15 years old…)
Dude came in 8th out of 9, but he qualified! Most people think he has the potential to become a good courser with more experience. :)

  • Congratulations and have fun!

  • Congratulations! How exciting!

A few weeks ago I took Jazzy to a lure coursing event, just to see if she showed interest. She did for the first minute or two, then went to sleep field side. LOL I'm not sure she's a good candidate.

  • he was quite fun to watch, but the joy in your face that weekend was even better to see. Looking forward to seeing Dude and more of the Illusion crew at coursing events.

  • Congratulations! That is so great!

I took Zahra for the first time last month for a practice. She is only 6 months old and only did half the course but the group thinks she has potential.

Her first time she ran she started going then ran off course, pee'd and then got right back on the course! LOL!

My Puggle, Chase, ran as a wannabe and he did awesome! After Zahra saw Chase run she ran even better the next time.

  • Good for Zahra! Sometimes they just get so excited they just have to pee! But it's great that she went back on the course.

Dude has a thing for brindles. His wrestling and racing buddy here at home is our crazy Energizer (you know, she keeps going and going…) brindle Amina. So when he went against a brindle boy in the first heat he charged gleefully over to him at the end - the boy was not impressed! In the second heat he was up against a dark brindle girl who even looks like our Amina. At the end of that one he ran over to her and they took a tour of the field together. He's not aggressive about it, he just wants to play! He totally ignored the reds that were also coursing.

Normally the clubs have practices after the Saturday trials. Unfortunately none of the clubs in our area have separate practice days. You might also think about going to some of the lira meets for straight run practices. The schedule is at lgra.org

@ComicDom1: Kelli, Miranda and I are interested in Lure Coursing also. We are located in IL so we will be looking here and in the surrounding states for events. ComicDom1 Jason If you are not far from the WI border, the BCOSW club is having a coursing fundraising event at Lurecoursing Fanatics on May 9th in Somers, WI. It's fenced in and it's just for fun and open to any breed. $5 for one run, $8 for two. I'm bringing Zoni so she can do a puppy run or two. The info for the ASFA field trial in Belvidere, IL is also on the BCOSW website. http://www.bcosw.org/ (go to the events page)

Yay glad to see some more local interest! As far as training, there is a group called SONG (Sighthounds of North Georgia) that does informal practices once a month or so depending on man power & weather. These practices are a great way to introduce a new dog to the lure. However, for most dogs its an instinctual thing & they don't need much training. Lola & Callie both caught on to it their first time. I just let them both watch other dogs doing it first, then let them go & they did their thing. Website for SONG: http://www.nghounds.info/index_files/Page430.htm It doesn't get updated frequently, but go to the lure coursing practice tab, scroll to the bottom & there are instructions to get on the e-mail list for upcoming practices. Hope to see you lure coursing soon!

@Mia: I tried an online seach for lure coursing in Orlando but nothing. The closest one is about an hour away, actually ASFA only cites 3 in the whole state of Florida! If anyone can give me advice on how to find a club and get my puppy running that would be great. Thanks If they are not listed with ASFA or not AKC ( and I check AKC site and looks like only one club in AKC does coursing in FLA, Sunshine State Coursing Club of Central Florida) most likely you will not find one any closer. You might try NOTRA (oval track and see if any in FLA) but usually the same clubs that course do NOTRA. Also you might contact the club in Fla and ask them..

@lvoss: In order to get a JC your dog does not need to run with another dog. A JC is earned by your dog running the course by itself. It must pass 2 JC tests to earn the title. To certify a dog for ASFA the dog must run with another dog and show that it will not interfere. D'oh! I got the two mixed up :) But that's what I meant, lol…. Most of the lure trials we attended were ASFA trials....I think we did do practice runs at ONE AKC trial, but Jibini was less than 1 year old so I am pretty sure thats why we never did a JC "qualifying" run. I'm tempted to get back into it now that I have my own "pair".....but it always seems money is an issue that makes a 300-400 mile weekend jaunt a bit out of reach!! I also found it disheartening that there were so few Basenjis entered in Florida lure courses, and among those I met, nobody had dogs who could run with a strange dog. However, I enjoyed the time I spent at Lure trials and letting Jibini run....it was fun, even if we didn't get any "alphabet soup" for Jibini's name!!! Defintely an experience well worth it :)
