• I posted this for new folks who don't know about puppymills and need to see why we need to shut them down.

  • Every so often a puppy mill gets busted in Ontario. (yes, we have the problem too). And also puppies are imported from puppy mills in the States. The usual giveaway is a pet store pup with an AKC registration. Unfortunately the law of supply and demand is at work here. As long as there is a market and not much regulation, it is hard to get rid of this problem.

  • Yes, it sadly all over. I think folks who get a dog from a shop, don't understand what the adult dog go through. Even folks who get a dog from a hobby breeder. They KNOW they take care of their puppy…no idea what is in store for the puppies they don't take.

I hate to say it, but the same can be said for the pups produced by some "reputable show breeders". My personal definition of "responsible breeder" is someone who cares enough to keep tabs on all pups sold, and who will take them back if need be, so that they never end up in shelters. A friend of mine who is a breeder recently took back a ten year old, which truly is "above and beyond" what could be expected!

I know several breeders…...mostly show, one or two you might define as hobby.....who are dedicated to the welfare of what they produce. You get a pup from them and don't keep in touch, you are getting a phone call, believe me.

  • My breeder friends in the PNW are always willing to take back any dog at ANY age. They contact me if they lose touch with a pup of theirs and will drive for days to get the dog back. I am lucky doing rescue in my area. Other folks who do rescue with less responsible breeders have it much tougher. So, all I can say is I don't see this lack of responsiblity from quality breeders in my area.

  • The rescue, The Medfly Brigade Basenji Rescue in So Cal where I got Buddy had me sign a paper that states that I must give him back if I cannot keep him. Karen, who runs it with her husband out of their home is 110% dedicated.

  • Medfly is a great rescue. They do a wonderful job.

Though I have not met breeders from other areas, (so I cannot speak specifics about them), I must agree with Sharron. The breeders and rescue people I have met in the Pacific North West are truly a wonderful group of people. As the owner of a companion dog who means everything to us, it is such a feeling of security knowing that Kipawa's breeders and friends care as much about Kipawa as we do.

  • eeeefarm - just read your thread and am surprised to read that you consider taking back a 10 year old is 'above and beyond' what can be expected. I feel a responsible breeder should take back at any age if necessary and if humanly possible.
