Yappy Hour

Basenji Talk

  • Friday night we took Nicky & Eddie to a friend's home for Yappy Hour. 10 dogs total, mine had not met them before but all was great, not a single grumble. Then a couple brought their little pig, Hamilton to a dog-party!

The dogs were all curious, he is about Nicky's size and pretty much ignored the dogs as they sniffed him all over. Then a bit later, one of the resident dogs realized, Hey, there's a pig in my yard! and started barking at him. Hamilton started running and suddenly it was 'bacon on the hoof' and most of the dogs joined in. Pig, 8 dogs, 4 or 5 humans, racing around this yard, behind trees and bushes, woodpiles…where was a video camera when you need one??? Dogs were grabbed, Hamilton ran back to Mom, everyone chilled out, more sniffing and pig went outside the fence to root beside the lake and mingle with people on the dock. All was well, and no pigs were actually harmed in the melee. Humans had wine and food, eventually we brought home 2 tired little basenjis, exhausted from their social evening.

(At the table, someone commented that maybe we shouldn't eat the ham, out of respect to Hamilton!)

I'm trying to figure how to upload a couple of shots from Iphoto, the pics are blurry though.

  • Do you have photos? I have to see this to believe it! LOL!

  • Houston

How funny and his name…I love it :):D

  • A very good description Ann that has me LOL! Years ago someone brought their pig to the beach. He was big too. My 2 Basenjis just sniffed him and the pig was calm about it and could care less.

  • "Bacon on the hoof" lol - great description, I can almost picture it. :)

  • About 17 yrs ago I took a miniature pig to my sister… me, a 3 yr old child and a baby pig driving from here to NJ. I researched, she researched, she wanted it so I rescued it. They were the craze. Flash forward about 5 yrs and the stuff on the internet had become chilling... pigs mature and often become aggressive and destructive. The pig havens are overflowing with abandoned pigs. (My vet took the other pig, btw. But she has a farm and let it live outside with another rescued pig, once it got bigger and destructive, like real pigs so never had issues.) Babyroot finally died about 2 yrs ago. Honestly I know after many thousands of dollars in damage, my sister felt some relief. She had contacted pig havens as far as Calif over the years and either they were full or she didn't feel confident they would care for her. She was always great with their dogs and let the cat sleep, no joke, on top of her.

Leora with Babyroot when she was about 3 yrs old:

  • That is a much bigger pig than Hamilton! Funny photo.

  • Hamilton - perfect name for a pig! Sounds like the party was a lot of fun. It is amazing the B's didn't just try to chomp down on all that pork.

  • A very interesting party!

@MacPack: I'll check it out. My DH Donald takes most of our photos and some sites claim ownership of all photos posted there so he is leery. Sounds easy enough, if I can e-mail photos there, then figure how to get them from there to here, haha! This site actually does that, but since the photos aren't actually physically posted here (uploaded to this site) , but are hot linked, I am not sure how they can be "claimed". That clause gave me pause as well…....and apparently also applies to what is written. It would make for an interesting legal case, for sure, if someone inadvertently posted copywritten material. Of for that matter if the material was posted elsewhere without attribution or with false attribution. BTW, from Photobucket's terms & conditions: "You retain all your rights to any Content you submit, post or display on or while using Photobucket. This means that YOU own ALL the Content you post"

Well the clever hoomans managed to keep Vanda inside over the last 24 hours :D. Nemo, that is exactly what went through my mind, and let me tell you, it scares the $*(^ out of me :D. I think this little lady will be keeping us on our toes a lot more than Ochre and Saba do :p. We were prewarned by her breeder, so I guess I will have to do extra checks on Vanda alone… wizard, I was thinking exactly that same thought while I was typing, the stiff drink I mean ;)

@BDawg: If anyone wants to train my sled dog to do this…!! :) Miles thinks he's pulling a team when we go for a walk!! That is amazing!! Makes me want to get a clicker. Maybe you should get one of these to have the "reel fun". [image: D_gg14_Memo_1.jpg] Regards, Esther

I need to say thank you to Andrea, Pat & Lisa…the info here and in the "Zoni" thread has been a huge help. I am now 100% sure that Brando is telling Liyah to SHUT UP...and it seems to be working :D:D:D. So far I have a really good sleeper - one night she cried for a half hour, but 2 of the nights she has slept right thru. Much of that credit is going to Ruby & Brando. In the morning and evening, they have been have really funny B500s with the puppy...sometimes she is the chaser and sometimes she is the one being chased. It is hilarious when she is being chased by them. :D:D Brando has been much better with her I'd say. The thing that Lisa said about one of her dogs wanting the puppy around on his own terms is exactly what is going on. She is finally giving him some respect when he starts to growl at her telling her to get away. Sometimes she ignores the cue and then he lets her know in no uncertain terms...he did it yesterday and she cried because she was scared at first, but then she actually stood up to him, standing on her hind legs and growling back at him :eek::eek:. When she did that, Brando stopped growling and just walked away. A couple of times he's growled at her to back away, and if she doesn't go far enough away, he will follow after her until she gets to where he wants her to be. She definitely gets what he is saying then :D. Brando is now coming up on the couch if the puppy is up there. I spend a lot of time petting him with the puppy around so that he still sees he'll get attention if he is near me. Also, if Liyah goes to sleep during the day, I'll move away from her (so she is on her own) and spend time with Ruby and Brando together, or separately. This whole interaction/dog language is fascinating to watch. The corrections that Ruby gives her are really interesting. Ruby is super patient but when the biting is too much she just stands there and turns her head away from her and stops the play. As well, if Liyah is really going after Ruby and she wants to rest, she has put Liyah on her side with her mouth around her neck and growled...Brando has done the same thing. One time when Brando really growled at Liyah, Ruby got up and stood between Liyah and Brando :D:D:D. Oh, and we got a foot of snow here (Maine) yesterday and Liyah had a blast running around in it. She is such a brave and adventurous little kid. I know it is cold out, but I figure the more she gets used to it here as a pup, the less issue I'll have with her as an adult in bad weather. So far she has been out when it is raining and when it is snowing...just one more adventure. I'm trying to give her a bunch of new experiences every day. Things feel like they are going so well...:D:D:D

mia is 5 months old today.. and i have classes from 8am-145pm without a break long enough to come home. plus an hour total of travel time. shes fine in her crate for 7 hours. and shes done that since we first got her when she was 8 weeks old. granted its only 2x a week. we've started leaving her out if we go to dinner or something like that.. and she doesnt potty in the house then either. she can hold it for quite awhile. but i guess every dog is different
