    zeus & milosh, taking milosh for a teeth cleaning-he will be there most of the day.

    was thinking bringing both with me for the ride- but since iam only leaving one with the vet i dont want to stress him out as me n zeus leave him there- but i also dont want to leave zeus at home alone as i we leave to the vet…what should i do????

    they always go on walks together!-any suggestions?

    Wow I don't know why posts are taking several days to pop up as new! I guess by now too late to help, but really, I'd crate Zeus. He needs to learn to be alone and it is not a long time.

    Or you would be surprise with alone time not in a crate… my girls are bonded.. but I have no problem taking one to the Vet and leaving the other alone at home... since that are used to being loose their part of the house.. there are no issues...

    Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

    Introduce a cat to 2 adult basenjis

    You're doing a great job introducing the cat to the basenjis, I would continue to do what you're doing, but don't leave them alone just yet. I would keep them in different rooms while you are away. Also, as another person said, the cat and the bird will be more of a challenge, since the cat is more likely to hunt the bird. Keep the supervision going with all three species. My basenjis always wanted to chase cats they saw outside, but did not chase the cats we had, because they had been socialized and they thought of the cats as part of the pack.     Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

    @ibi_n_sane: I think your dogs are giving you a silent hint to change their food into BARF ;-) I would not worry about the squirrels, frankly if they were in good shape of body and mind they would not be caught by a basenji ;-) That's what worries me!

    @MacPack: I learned some years ago that black basenjis get much hotter than reds, that black coat absorbs the sun. My 14 year old red girl was going strong when the 1 1/2 year old black boy drug us under a tree and threw himself down in the cool grass, panting. I always take water along, and try and make sure they aren't overheated, but I see so many people out running with a dog (here in Florida) with no water for the dog. It makes me sad and angry! Also among red basenjis, some can stand the heat much better than others. One of my girls, her son, and also her mother wilt very easily in the heat. They pant easily, and like to seek out the shade quickly.
