    Hi, I just had a ridiculous situation happen. I was going to take my birth control pill for today and after taking it out of the package I set it on the counter while I got some water. Well, my basenji jumped up and actually got it! She got almost half of it, but luckily spit the rest of it out. I called the emergency vet in a city near me, and they said such a small amount shouldn't hurt her, but if I wanted to be 100% certain I could call poison control, but that would cost $55. Do you think its necessary to call or shouldn't I worry? She only got barely half of one pill.

    Not to take business away from the SPCA, but Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine has 24-hour Animal Poison control number. All you pay for is the phone call. The number is 785-532-5679. Here's an article from the webpage with all the info you need.

    I haven't used them, but I know K State turns out some top-notch vets and specialists.

    Thank you, Tosca is ok now, but I think I will write this down for future reference, 55 is a lot to pay otherwise for a phone call!

    We had a Dalmatian that started having these issues at the same age as your B. Vestibular disease got worse causing her to lose her balance and fall when walking, loss of strength in her hindquarters and incontinence. I am not aware of any treatments for the VD, but there are a number of human treatments for strokes that might be able to be used in dogs.

    One thing you can do to help his coat is to bathe him every 1-2 weeks with Murphy's Oil Soap. Use your fingers and gently "scrub" him while he is soaped up. (Murphy's does not produce much lather so don't expect it.) The massaging will loosen dead hair and help it fall out. This stimulates new hair to grow. Murphy's has natural oils including coconut that help moisten the skin and keep it healthy.

    @tanza: Hmm…. I would "bet not".....gggg;) And you'd win! This morning, Magnum followed me down to the laundry room where I had put some painted-up towels I used last night to get off a lot of the paint when it first happened. Luckily, I was able to grab them up just as he got into position to throw himself down and roll on them. (I trashed them after getting them as clean as I could.) He just loves rolling in stuff that's smelly, whether it's a good smell or a bad smell! He may have learned a lesson, but it's obviously not one that's gonna stop him from rolling in smelly stuff! He seems to be okay even after getting several licks of paint in, no tummy problems, his usual laid-back self. Eating and drinking well.

    On any older dog, cataracts are very common… It would be very hard for a Ophth. Vet to mix up PRA with cataracts. Did you take your Basenji to a board certified eye vet?

    I was just about to add a post, when I had to leave and pick the kids up from school - saying that my Basenji did a similar thing. It started with her normally soft fur getting really coarse along her backbone. While I didn't notice any more than the usual tiny bit of shedding in the late summer months, it is now back to it's normal "super soft puppy like fur" too! Great news!
