Recalled pet food

Basenji Feeding
  • Thanks for the alert Fran. I've never even heard of those brands. Grocery store pet food is pretty bad stuff anyway.

  • It truly is. But some people have no other choice (finances?). I think most of us on this forum are quite picky about the foods we feed our animals, thank goodness.

  • I'm picky now about my dog foods because I can afford to be, but honestly when I was a kid we fed them strictly table scraps – my folks never EVER bought dog food; we'd scrape plates and pots into a pan and the dogs ate it, loved it, and lived long and healthy lives on it. I never even remember taking our dogs to the vet.
When dh and I were starting out, we bought what many here call "crap", and our dogs always lived healthy long lives.
    I'm just sayin' . . . . .

  • Hmm… just the name of some of these brands... "Kroger Value Chunk Dog Food".... However the ingredients are not much different then many of the so called "popular" brands...

While I understand "financial" concerns, better quality food equals usually feeding less so what you spend up front is a savings in the end....

And I hear you JazzysMom... I think many of use from generations in the 50's or 60's did much the same..... but as with all things, as you learn new ways, you learn better ways.

  • @tanza:

While I understand "financial" concerns, better quality food equals usually feeding less so what you spend up front is a savings in the end….

Not only that, but better health in the long run, so potentially less $$$ spent on vet bills.

Just like with us humans, you have to think outside of the box when it comes to how much you spend on food. In the long run spending extra $ on higher quality food may mean savings over time with our health.

I would find out what he scared of or what he dislikes about the car. Is it the car itself, the sensation of being closed in, the movement when the car is being driven? Then work on whatever the problem is, with food. As for food, I use raw duck and vegetables. And I hand-feed all meals, so I never have a problem with not eating/partially eating. I would also recommend hand-feeding for anyone who does have a dog with food issues. Shredded chicken is good (as long as he doesn't have any reactions). But that and some kibble isn't a balanced meal. You may wish to look into a vitamin supplement, specifically something that has a focus on omega 3 (since chicken is high in omega 6), Vitamin C & the B vitamins (because if all he's eating is chicken and kibble, where is his source of vitamin C and the B vitamins?), zinc & copper (same reasons). All the best. EDIT: I just realized this thread is a year old and was bumped by what is almost certainly a bot.

Ive just put one of my guys on TOTW, and just bought a bag yesterday. Thankfully this bag appears to not be affected, BUT… I have 4 sample packs, one of which is open and has been fed to the dog... I cant find a Production Code box on any of the sample packs ??? Should I just chuck them out, or does anyone know how I can check to see if these are contaminated ??? ETA Im in Australia, and have heard nothing about this recall, until I came here today...

The word "Made in China" doesn't appear on any human or dog/cat food that comes into our house. I even question things that say don't say they are "Made in China" but say something like "Distributed by So and So company, anyplace". I need to know the maker of the food is getting the ingredients from North America and that the food is manufactured and packaged in North America. More recently I am not buying other products Made in China (e.g. drinking glasses, plates, coffee cups, food containers, etc.) but this can be way more difficult. :(

Lynn, Your b likes bread too? My boy is terrible around buttered toast! It is like a moth to a flame! But on a more serious note, I do agree that less grain in their diets is better. From all the stuff I've read about meat feeding (raw vs cooked and etc) on this forum, most of us are trying our best to move toward that. But keep looking up stuff on snopes cuz I use that site too!!:)
