R/W Boy- Asheville NC

Basenji Rescue
  • I saw this following ad on Craig's List, and wrote to the owner to see if the dog was still available. Here was her response:

Thanks for asking about our basenji. Yes, we are still looking for a home for him, but as of now we are actually looking for him. He escaped off our porch and has been gone almost a week now. We have fliers up and neighborhood kids looking for him, but as of yet no one has spotted him.

If/when we find him, I will let you know.

Perhaps he's trying to find his way home, but apparently, he didn't want to be there either. :(If there is anyone in the Asheville NC area that reads this, and if you hear of a found boy in the Carolinas, this may be where he came from.

Male 2 year old full-blooded red & white Basenji. Loves to sleep in bed with you and snuggle up on the couch with you. Doesn't shed (much) and is a really beautiful dog. Loves to ride in the car with you. Doesn't bark at all, although he does make sounds, especially when yawning or when left alone. He gets along great with other dogs and even seems to want to play with them. He knows the sit command and will obey - when he wants to. Walks great on a leash. Doesn't seem aggressive, although he does slightly growl if you try to take a toy away.

We were given this dog by his former owner who said he was house broken and crate trained. We quickly found out that he isn't completely house broke and he HATES being in a crate. In fact, he darn nearly tore up the wire crate we had him in, bending the wires and chewing up the plastic tray in the bottom (we were told he makes some noise when he first goes in it but then settles down). We tried to find the owner's post here on CL, but it's nowhere to be found, or we'd return him to them (if you're reading this and want him back, please feel free to email us about him).

We are in the process of moving into a new house and just won't take the chance that he'll tear something up there too.

We believe he needs someone who will take him everywhere they go or will let him have the run of the house (we can't do either). If you have the time and patience to spend with him and would be interested in giving him a really good home, please let us know, as we really DO care about this dog and don't want to just dump him someplace.

I hope it is permissible to post this information, as it would benefit the dog.

  • I will keep an eye on the shelters in my area and craigslist.

Thanks so much Sharon. I hope BRAT can help Frankie; I have this sinking feeling that someone would see how cute he is and adopt him without knowing anything about Basenjis - and there he'd be, in rescue or a shelter again! Terry

@lisatest: What do you all think about getting a dog micro chipped? Last night I caved and let her sleep in her bed on our bed. Amazingly no whining. I believe Mia won on this battle. :) She is very precious and she puts a smile on my face every single day. I got my boy microchipped when he was neutered. It didn't cost much extra & I like the extra sense of security I have now. Although, as Tanza said, they do wander. Dallas' started out on his shoulder blade & now is more in his front thigh. If that makes sense. The vet said it is not an issue now but if it keeps moving towards his chest, she will have to remove it & replace it in a better spot. However, it is still completely worth it. Welcome to basenji ownership 101. They are so darn persistant when they want something. Dallas sleeps in my bed & is quite the bed hog! Also, he must sleep under the covers now! Once you give in, there is no going back. Haha. So glad it worked out so well for you & that she makes you so happy. I look forward to seeing more pictures of her!
