Who says I'm not supposed to bark!

Basenji Talk
  • Sonny went to the vet last night for his yearly check-up. He does not like the vets office at all! But he especially does not like the vet herself. She's actually a very nice lady but to Sonny she is not a friend :( While we were sitting in the exam room waiting for her, Sonny was laying at my feet looking out the door. When the vet walked by the door the 1st time he let out a loud BARK! and he continued to bark everytime she passed the door for the next 10 minutes. Off course the whole vet staff found this to be hysterical. next thing we knew he had an audience outside the exam room waiting to hear the "barkless" basenji BARK :p… and I must admit Sonny has a very funny sounding bark so it is amusing......when she came in the room to examine him he put on his tough guy attitude for about 30 seconds and then decided to just let her do her thing so we could get the hell outta there! :)

  • I love it. Jaycee says nothing just shakes and Jayden just loves vet and everyone there from people to four legged friends. We have great vet she is really good with both of the B's.

  • If your vet is nice, you can fix this. :)

Take Sonny by the vet a couple of times a week if you can and just leave the vet his fave treats. She can pop him one, you leave. After a few times, he will associate her with good. :)

Does Sonny boof (single bark) or repeat barking? Cara BOOFS a lot. BOOF….. Boof.... Boof.

Usually he lets out a double bark….if it's because he's excited -then its often a single bark followed by some singing :p

  • Abbey's a boofer once in while but the other day when we met our new neighbor's dog she strained really really hard and came out with MUURRPPHH!! The other dog looked like HUH???

  • I can just imagine the amusement in the vets :D

@eeeefarm: The digital age has somewhat muddied the waters. Once upon a time you could buy a book or a DVD and when you were finished using it you could pass it on to your friends so that they could enjoy it (you still can!), and that isn't considered stealing. Make a copy for them to view, with the same exact result (they get to see the movie or read the book), and suddenly it is illegal. The law was drafted to prevent people from making numerous copies and selling them for profit, a clear infringement to copyright. For a person to make a copy for a friend to view rather than snail mailing the original seems to be in a "shades of grey" area. I'd be surprised if most on this forum haven't at some point downloaded something for personal use that would infringe copyright if the letter of the law was applied. You make a good point Shirley.. except that even 40 yrs ago you could tape or even xerox music/books to share, but it wasn't legal. The problem is that if a person LOANS you his movie, snail mail, it goes to one person only, and it goes back to the owner… you don't get to keep a copy. If you put on a server, many can copy it. Right now musicians are in terrible financial straits over people pretty much stealing their work instead of buying it. Some music programs (I am blanking on names) pay the artists a bit every time you listen to their music, thanks to advertising. That's great. But if I want to own a song on my own computer or to burn on a disk, call me a patsy-- but yes, I buy it. I believe people who create books, music, art... they have a right to get paid as much as your plumber, mechanic or grocer. I don't sneak into movie theaters either, btw, not even if I could do it and not be caught. Many digital books can be loaned, btw. I have borrowed a few and loaned many of mine through Amazon. You could, of course, just let someone borrow your e-reader or mp3 player, lol, but that's more generous than I want to be. I don't know what the solution will be years from now... I know that cable companies tried to block recording movies and that didn't go over so well. So I do agree there are certainly conflicting and gray areas. But a cavalier approach to stealing, justifying it because the owner is rich, etc... that bothers me. And it bothers me for someone to try to pretend it is legal or for educational etc. If you are going to do something, man up. :) Thanks for the calm voice. :)

I had nose surgery a few months ago and when I got home I was worried the dogs would be so excited and jump all on me, but it was crazy how mild mannered and dare I say tame/domesticated they were. I swear they knew I was hurt and gave me a day or so of good behavior. They are truly great dogs to own!

That is hilarious! Probably talking to a dog outside! My 17 year old cat has never meowed, she has always said "mat, mat, mat, mat" over and over. Perhaps she's calling Matt? Maybe wanting us to put a mat down? Doesn't have a clue she's a cat? All I know, is meow isn't in her vocabulary.

I think everyone who decides to have these little furbabies has to make a conscious decison that housekeeping is going to fall by the wayside in some areas. . . for instance it's not real easy to keep carpets nice and clean when they drag their treats and bones all over it! We just vacuum and count on getting in a professional cleaner a couple of times a year. Other than that, our friends just have to understand - we have a Basenji!

Oh WOW, you guys are sooooo helpful. Thanks DDS for the link, that was especially helpful. I'm just intrigued with this breed for some reason, and I'm not sure why. Reading what all of you have to say is better that the typical things that you read on the computer. They all just repeat the same thing over and over where as all of you can give me personal experiances. I know all puppies are a lot of hard work, but compared to other dog (which I see some of you have had other breeds) are they actually a lot tougher? All pups like to chew and get into trouble but are they especially hard to train. Lets say with housebreaking and such? Oh and for all of you that have cats too, do they stay out of the kitty box or are the prone to make there way there, if you catch what I'm saying. I read they they are very clean and often times will clean themselves like a cat does. Really? And they are aloof like cats? Soooo much info and I would rather hear all of this from you than get false info. HELP!!
