My First Foster

Basenji Rescue
  • Yesterday I got my first BRAT foster, Duke, who is super sweet. He is fitting in great and Piper is absolutely in love with him, poor Duke never gets a minute of peace because Piper is always trying to instigate play. She just runs up and smacks him in the face with her paw and runs away trying to get him to chase her, but Duke does not seem to mind and appears to be having a good time with her. He is still not completely comfortable here and will probably still take a little while before he really relaxes and settles in, but we have not had any real problems or major disagreements yet so, so far so good.

  • Duke is a great looking dog! Love the pics of him and Piper :) Lycia is exactly the same with smacking Tillo in the face and then running away.. gg.. always fun to watch.

  • Duke will make someone a wonderful companion and handsome too. The two of them look great together.

  • Duke looks a great Basenji, glad he's settling with you and hope he finds a forever home soon.

  • Thank you so much for opening your home up to Duke.
I will look forward to stories on how he is settling in.

Please go to Basenjirescue.org and join as a member. It will show you are serious about helping. BRAT always needs good foster homes. A home visit will be required (not sure if that is possible at this time considering this COVID-19 crisis). It is especially helpful if you have basenji experience. Not always, but very often, a basenji coming into rescue has special needs (i.e., behavioral, medical, etc.). It is good to ask yourself if you and your family are willing to deal with that. Fostering is hard but it can also be a wonderful and rewarding thing to do.

BTW, I also use the shunning method with my basenji. He gets into everything and so I have to baby proof my house. Sometimes I leave a drink on the table and he tries to drink out of it and when I catch him with it, I let him know I am mad! I growl at him and then turn my back to him and he gets very upset. When he does anything I do want him to do, all I have to do is growl at him and he comes over to me bows his head and curls up in my lap. I guess it is an instinctual reaction to submit to his pack leader. He hates it when I ignore him in any way. He is funny, because he will sit down and look at me and whine or try to jump up on the chair with me if he thinks I am mad at him. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk

Nayru did get to go. She loved the first stop because there were three children there who adored her. I brought along treats. She was nearly perfect. LOL. Second stop was a B-filled house and she wasn't too big on having to share the pretty redhead,pointy-ear spot.

That's so sweet. I'm glad there is a tentative truce now.
