  • @pedro:

well wait… i have some more research i did and it's saying to put the dog on a high qulity, low protein food!. is saying that part of the food stuff is the way to teat the syndrome.

Please read carefully, it is when the dog shows symptoms, NOT BEFORE. Just because he test Prob Affected, this is a LATE onset issue and can show up anytime between 3yrs and 12yrs.. usual being around 6 or 7.

There is NOTHING to treat before he shows symptoms

  • K!, but would it hurt to put him on a high qualiy low -protein diet. or show i wait till he shows berofe putting him on that kind of food!!???

  • what does high quality and high protein dog food do for the dog?. and what is the difference on the food!>??

  • High quality proteins are easily digested and do not tax the kidneys as much as lower quality proteins.

Honestly, any good quality food is good and if you are concerned about protein, go with one that is moderate

Strip test at least once a month for about 3 to 4 days in a row

  • thks tanza, i have been testing him 2x a week!, but i thiank it was high protien food!!. do you guys have any names of food that the healthy basenji's like and names??.! he? very picky!!.

  • should i do this in the mid of the month?.

  • @pedro:

should i do this in the mid of the month?.

Same time every month is a good way to remember, doesn't matter when during the month.

Again as far as food, you need to read the ingredients and then decided for yourself. There are a number of good foods…

  • Pat, she might need a bit more help than that..suggestions maybe?

I can only answer by naming the foods that I use, I don't recommend things I don't use. The Natural Balance foods are good, Potato and Duck for example. People really need to learn to reseach themselves and feed what they are comfortable with

  • thks tanza, i'm going today to get him some moderate protien food!!. i have been testing him and sofar it hasnt changed!.

  • Pedro, we hope you don't have any signs of this illness for many years to come.

  • thks !! i hope no one ever has to go through this!. i got him some other food the moderate protein kind!.maybe starting this ven if he hasn't show any signs might help more!!. to pospone it longer!!?? i can only keep my fingers cross now! my daughter at chruch yesterday they offered people to come up and lite a candle and she went a lit one for pedro!!. and came back to sit down and said to now this has to help him mom!! but maybe by me trying to put him on a moderated portein diet not might help even more!??.

@Andrew: Worst feeling ever!!!! Lola got to half of a chocolate covered granola bar …I had heard somewhere you have a 30 minute time limit before the chocolate does damage. Just wanted to share this link showing the amounts of different types of chocolate it would take before you see a toxic reaction. http://www.vspn.org/Library/misc/VSPN_M01325.htm If it was a sugar free granola bar, and contained Xylitol, that would have been much more dangerous however. -Nicole

I do agree with Tanza that yous hould check what is under the deck stairs that cause her booboo. My B loves to dig so I think you should check out what can hurt Lillie in case she is inclined to be a digger like my B. Hope she feels better. Give her lots of hugs and kisses.

I do now seeing what you say I do agree with a more verbal and/or stand up and as you say "higher dog" split them up. And I have seen this many times, where my boxer would do that at a dog park, he's such a dork lol, some dogs would start arguing and he'd go shoulder his way inbetween them and just stand there. I can also understand your point that there are a high number of boxers that don't get the clue and subtle hints, and part of it JMO is back to training. And the whacking them in the face, yep thats a boxer, lol. And I can understand that Basenjis don't like that. When we frst met our neighbor that had a Basenji, Reggie tried his normal "boxer" techniques (but thankfully he's not a face wacker) to get the B to play, pawing at him, low woofs, etc, since that didn't work he took the B's toy and stood there squeaking it at him and then took off in a game of chase, they were friends until we moved away.

Gipper sometimes get a little agressive, but nothing more than a growl or a nip. It ususally comes when he gets woken up from a nap outside of his crate and someone other than myself tries to put him up. When he's already awake, he's fine. Also, I've noticed that he is virtually perfect when it's just me and him, or him and my roomie- basically when it's him and one other person, he's the most mellow, relaxed little gentelman you'd ever meet. But when two people are there… it takes about a half hour for him to calm down and quit jumping and wanting to rough-house. I try to wrestle with him for about five or ten minutes a day, to let him have some play time, all the while pinning him, letting him know that I am still the "Alpha Male" and always will be. It seems to work really well, because he's getting better and better as each day passes.
