I watched a few videos by vets on YouTube about how to express the glands. I think I'll just let our vets do it every now and then with check ups or we need to go in for it. It's not only not something I really want to do for the mess of it but I just don't trust myself to do it right and as you said Debra it's cheap and hopefully we won't need it done more than once or twice a year if at all. So far we've had our vets do it once for each dogs in our almost 18 months of Basenji parenting…both times because the vet said they probably needed it (the likely cause of the issue and hence vet visit). What I definitely can do is continue to make sure they eat well/healthy. Like I said before I know the full-sized solid poops are the best for more than one reason! Thankfully we've gotten them both into a routine over the last few months that really has seen them stabilize their bowel movements and help our younger new B pick up potty training real well. We'll just continue down that path. Thankfully like I mentioned in an earlier post all the "pains in the butt" seem to be occurring less often as they age. The desire for me to post here was to try to narrow down some possible causes. Thanks for all the input!!!

When I had my two Basenji girls, and my Border Collie, I often fed them all at the same time in summer when they were out enjoying the dog run, but I stuck around until they were done (not long!!) because the younger one would try to "help" the older one finish her dinner, and both would be happy to enjoy anything the Border Collie left, but not if I was present to glare at them! ;) (the Border Collie would even defer to the cat if she decided to help herself to his meal.)

@Shaye's: Otherwise, a visit to the vet to have the glands cleared is in order. Good idea to have someone show you how to do this yourself. Your vet or pretty much any groomer can demonstrate, if you don't know already. I sure wouldn't want to have to pay the vet every time it needed to be done, especially if she has an ongoing problem.

We discovered a 2nd dog park within 20 minutes of our apartment…but this place is an extra 77 acres more than our closest dog park which is 3 acres! I don't know how nice or big dog parks are outside of the USA but I can say that this place may be the nicest dog park in the nation. It's on a national park with a reservoir fed by a creek. The dog park portion is fenced off and has bags, trash cans, water fountains, and people potties conveniently located. The main attraction is a half mile strip of creek bed with a running creek and usually a dozen or so wile water dogs...a conflicting situation for a playful Basenji that treats water like she's a cat! We had Juniper spayed about a month ago at 8 months old. Everything went well and her scar is almost healed…thankfully she doesn't seem to have lost any of her zeal! The vet said her sex organs looked as developed as a 3 y/o dog and it was they were the most mature looking sex organs he'd ever seen in 20 years of spaying and neutering. Believe it or not she went into a false labor after the spaying; about a week after the surgery her teats swelled up and when we took her to the vet he apparently squeezed out some milk! She was acting fairly normal but it was just as odd as it sounds! The vet said its rare but it can happen after a spaying because the hormone changes are similar to that of post-delivery. I did some research online and apparently false labors are common among wild wolves where the non-pregnant females will go into a false labor to provide milk and nurturing for offspring in the pack that are not their own.
