Hi @elbrant the breeder that I have located is in the Ukraine. She has pure bred basenjis of different colours. Most of the litter has gone but she still has some left.
Wanted: Basenji puppy in Denver, CO
-
Not in Colorado but I know that Waken Basenjis just had a litter. I'm not sure if there are any still available but it might be worth contacting them.
-
I just checked out the site, thank you Stazy. We'd like to meet the dogs before making a commitment, and I don't think that we'd be able to get out to VA. If it was a bordering State we'd be willing to work something out with a good breeder. I tried Mile High too but they never responded to my e-mail.

Have you check for responsible breeders at www.basenji.org?

Definitely a good place to start but I'll add that not all the breeders listed are necessarily responsible.
From the site:
Please be advised that BCOA does not inspect or monitor the facilities, breeding practices or sale, refund or return policies of its member-breeders, and therefore provides no guarantee, warranty or endorsement, express or implied, with respect to any listed breeder, or animals produced or sold by them.

Thank you Tanza, we have looked at the breeder directory and reached out to all of the breeders in CO. SkyHi never responded to our e-mail, and Pat (so nice) doesn't breed anymore.
-
Did you put an application into BRAT? http://www.basenjirescue.org/ as there may be dogs not in CO that are suitable.
Good luck!
-
I didn't contact BRAT. However, I reached out to the Colorado Basenji Rescue. I was under the impression that the C.B.R. was the CO 'arm' of BRAT. Is that correct? I never thought it'd be so hard to find a Basenji
-
I could be wrong, but although BRAT lists CBR I thought they ONLY list their own dogs whereas brat lists all over the country.
-
BRAT and CBR do work together sometimes, but I don't think that they share applications.
There is a dog show in Pueblo Nov 14/15th. Looks like a good number of basenji entries. They show at 920 Sat and 1245 on Sun. Would be worth a drive down there and meet some people/dogs.

I wouldn't just rely on email. Typically when I haven't received a return email I follow up with a phone call if I'm really interested. It is possible your email was rejected or placed in spam if you haven't heard back.
-
I'm down South all of the time; I'll definitely take a look at the dog show!
Thanks. I'll give them a call, according to their website they have puppies due later this month; although I wouldn't doubt that they're already spoken for.

I'm from the Springs and my husband and I are looking for a basenji as well. We haven't had luck in hearing back from any breeders except for two. I must've emailed at least seven. We were/are looking as far as Washington/Oregon, AZ, and MO.
I've been in contact with SkyHi Basenjis and she's asking $800. We can't afford that much for a dog. We were hoping $300-600. It doesn't have to be a puppy though.
-
You have also contacted BRAT, right? I wish you were closer, I went to evaluate the sweetest 4 yr old boy.. pretty small about 18 pounds, absolute love, here in GA.

You will not find a puppy from a responsible breeder that health tests before breeding for less then 800.00.
Here on the West Coast average is 950.00 to 1000.00 from responsible breeders.
You might want to consider BRAT or CO rescue.
And another tip, don't rely on just email, give a personal call too.

I have also called and left messages with no response. So a puppy from a breeder that goes for less than $800 anywhere in the US probably hasn't been health tested?
-
If you don't want a PUPPY, some breeders may have older dogs that didn't work out for showing or whatever reason so make sure you ask them about not-puppy placements.

In a nut shell, in my opinion, yes. They maybe have had one parent tested for Fanconi, maybe both, but that would be the extent of it. However, that said you should always get the registered names of the dogs and check out any health testing claims yourself at www.offa.org. The results are required to be public for Fanconi and responsible breeders that do testing will also post all test results. (Note: sometimes eye exams are not posted by all responsible breeders due to they are only good for one year and the cost, however in those case they, the breeder, can send you a copy of the eye exams)
Here is a link to one of my "kids" on OFA site and the kinds of tests…

Co basenji rescue has several young-ish dogs looking for homes. And those basenji/terrier mixes are adorable!
