• Today is the first birthday of the first litter of Podengo Grande born in the US. Happy Bday to all. I can't believe it has been so long already.
I do have pictures of many of them through the year on my website:
www.mijokrpodengo.com click on growing up grande tab.

One of my babies is also a daddy and his babies are not about 6 weeks. Here's your chance if you want one - LOL

  • They look like an interesting breed! I like the ears on the Podengo! Good luck with the breed preservation. I had never heard of them before.

  • My goodness - and you in CT too where many Portuguese live! In your area you would see more the litte (Pequeno) and sometimes the rabbit hunters will have the Medio size.

  • You may have answered this before, but were any of the pups in your first litter medios or were they all grande? Just curious.

  • First Basenji's

So gorgeous. Those ears just melt me.

Happy Birthday to our own Grande, Moses, and to all his siblings..10 in all..

Thank you Diana for letting us have him in our lives.
We love his wonderful demeanor, happy go lucky attitude towards all animals and humans..
He thinks he is a small dog so he "dog rapes" us all the time..and who can not love that?

He is about 25" in his withers and weighs 56lbs..so a big boy for sure..

These pictures were taken two days ago, except the last one, it is a few months old. We made a carrot cake for him to celebrate later, so more pictures tomorrow.

Here is our land shark..can you hear the Jaws theme?

He loves to play through the fence with the neighbors dogs..

Lizards are huge favorites as well and worms, an occasional egg stolen from the coop and chicken poop too..

Here he is stealing watermelon from the table..bad boy!! But you got to do what you got to do to get what you want…

…and here is the evidence, as if the picture wasn't enough..watermelon rind.

How can you not love this big fella?

  • Happy Birthday to the Podengos. They are wonderful looking dogs.

  • First Basenji's

    Happy birthday Podengos!

Happy birthday Moses! He looks like such a happy boy!

  • re: size - one male appears to be at the bottom of the standard but the ownere has not measured to confirm if he stayed small or not.

Libby the female I kept here is 23" barely. Most seemed to settled into the 24-26 range and are around 55-65 lbs.

The are fun dogs to have around - goofy personalities which I just adore.

The suprise of the litter was that a few ended up getting a little wire in their coat and 1 is pretty clearly wire - Wire is dominant and dad was out of a wire father and smooth mother. The interesting thing is that it was not obvious until after 5 months. Now that I know what to look for - next litter will be easier to identify.

8 babies in Vancouver if anyone is looking - LOL

  • Thanks for the pix Petra - he has grown to be a handome boy!

  • The Grandes look like a Basenji/Pharaoh Hound mix.

  • Happy birthday to the Grandes.

Since you posted about your babies on this forum I've purchased 'The Portuguese Podengo' by Vitor Veiga. It's very interesting and informative. Do you know of any other specialised books on the breed?

The small Podengos have become even more popular here in the UK and they are now much more standardised but we still (as far as I'm able to ascertain) don't have the Medio or the Grandes over here.

  • Happy to help you out in England. Yes you do have quite a supply of Pequenos there but from what I can see in show photos - getting a little too big. I understand that happens because in the UK you don't measure any breed - but it would be too bad if they got bigger than their purpose.

Let me know when you want to start on the bigs- LOL

  • re: Basenji Pharoh mix - The primitive dogs of the Mediteranian region have many similarities. I would guess that there are common ancestors for Pharoh, Caanan Dog, Ibizan, Podengo, etc etc. Given the transport patterns of the Phonecians - I'm sure there are common ancestors.

The stud book we have is only documented to 1928 although we know they were hunting long before - the smaller size Pequeno smooth were the ratters on the Explorer ships.

They're great dogs! Thanks for that piece of information.

Your welcome Diana, we are just so happy to have him. Yes, he is handsome for sure. Lots of interest when I bring him out of the woodwork..people just can not stop ohh-ing and ahh-ing over him and of course..he loves that.
Here are some pictures of him sitting and waiting ever so patiently for his slice of carrot cake, he even tried high fiving it..

    Waiting…

    High fiving…

    waiting some more..

    finally a taste..

ps again, the other dogs got a taste too…

  • wow one year allready! congrats!
    they are all so pretty!

  • Ah, how I wish I was 15 years younger - I'd love one!! In the meantime I can only drool (figuratively) over the pictures of yours!!

Yes some of the Pequenos here are rather on the big side but without measuring in the ring it can only be a guess. Personally when I judge (Basenjis only) I know exactly where on my leg is the maximium height, I think I would do the same if I did judge any breeds that had more than one size.

I would love to see a new rule that judges should have the matrix system tattoed on their legs hahahaha 😃

  • What a good idea!!!! Perhaps in their brains might be better!!!!!!
