• Hi all, hopefully someone will be able to help me!

We got Marley in Feb and he howled the first few night (totally understandable) and then settled into the night routine of going out for a wander just before bed, sleeping all night and getting up about 7am for morning walk. This has been going fine for months.

Skip to a few weeks ago and he starts whinging about 4am and will not settle again. Tried taking him out for a quick pee but still whinges when get back in and tried not giving him any attention. Neither of them work and starting to get to wits end of being woken up at dark o'clock and not being able to get him settled again!

    Any thoughts?

  • I know the feeling as it is breeding season for Basenjis just now my male has me up at the crack of dawn with his dawn chorus of howling as Belle is in season just now:rolleyes: thankfully this only goes on for a couple of days when she is ready to be mated, then normality resumes. I don't know if that is the case with Marley as he is still youngπŸ˜•

  • You could try a Dap spray on his bedding, it worked for my friends whippet!

  • What's a Dap spray?

  • That sounds like some kind of magic spray! Shall check it out, thank you πŸ™‚

  • I have heard good things about them so might be worth a try.

  • Where does Marley sleep?

  • He sleeps in the hallway.

  • I wonder if he is lonely and wants to be with the rest of the pack, ie you πŸ˜ƒ
Maybe if he where in the bedroom with you he would settle, i'm afraid to say my Basenji slept on the bed with us and i know this doesn't do for everyone.
The advise with a child would be to go and reassure him giving as little attention as poss and then leaving him again.

  • It is breeding season, and even if you have no females the boys know it is that time of year. So it could be this behavior is related to breeding season.

Mine used to get up at 4:30am because they could hear the paper boy delivering papers at that time.

  • I really didn't want to bring him into the bedroom, that's 'our' space and he's not really allowed in there anyways. Plus I take up enough room on the bed, there'd be no space for him!

We live right at the end of a road and the nearest hour is about quarter mile away and we don't get anything delivered so not like he's really getting disturbed with that.

Can maybe try the light reassurance with him, see if that'll help settle him.

  • My grandfather use to say that a male dog could smell a female a mile to five miles away. He may have a super good nose.

  • Good luck, i hope you get some peacefull nights soon.

  • Again, this is the beginning of Basenji breeding season.. and with many of the males you do not need a bitch around for them to know it is the "season"….My OJ would whine for the entire month of October

  • Not trying to be funny here but after all October is the Howling month. OJ was right with the months.
Does OJ the real name or is there more?

OJ is over the Rainbow Bridge (passed over January 2, 2009 at 17yrs 3 months). His Registered name Ch Bushbabies Obviously Jazz = OJ

And he was right on with Basenji Breeding season… totally a month of howling...

  • Don't tell me I might have another month and bit of this  πŸ˜‰

Typical, he's been curled up snoring next to me all evening, I should try whinging at him when he's sleeping πŸ˜‰

Also noticed recently that he's been more prone to accidents in the house. It started at night but now mostly seems to be during the day now. Got him checked for any infections at the vets but they couldn't find anything.

  • Well we got some of the DAP spray and used it on his bed and we've now had 3 nights in a row of undisturbed sleep πŸ˜ƒ

Also he slept in his crate for the first time last night, progress is good!
