DNA testing for Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency…

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I am getting myself organised to continue with my health testing, of Ochre and Saba. Saba is booked in this week to get his Hips/Elbows done, and he has already had his Fanconi done. Ochre is about to have her cheek swab done for Fanconi, just waiting to hear back from Genetic Technologies re that…

When I got some documentation from this company, it has a list of all the diseases that can be DNA tested for all the different breeds. Listed under the Basenji was Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency, (PK). (Interesting that Fanconi wasnt listed either )This stumped me as I had not heard of this disease in relation to the Basenji...

Is this something that should be routinely tested for ??? I will be doing some "homework", in relation to this disease, but Im just interested in people's thoughts :) Do I need to get it done ???

  • PK testing is for Hemolytic Anemia, mostly not seen in Basenjis today. Like Fanconi it is a recessive gene…. you can read about it at www.basenji.org or www.basenjihealth.org and it was a big problem 30 yrs ago (I may be wrong on the date.. it was before my time in Basenjis)

  • Thanks Tanza :).

Well you can see that I didnt do my homework on this disease BEFORE I posted my question :o:o.

(Says this, then runs off to commence my edumacation for the day. Topic is… H.A. :))

@AC~Akeyla: I was wondering when we should have our 1 year old B's checked for Fanconi? For some reason I thought they had to be a certain age. And what is the best way to go about getting them tested? And you are most likely thinking of the urine test strips, which was the only way to detect Fanconi before the DNA Test that is now widely used. Since Fanconi is a late onset, usually it was recommended that Basenjis be strip test with urine test strips beginning no later then age 3 (and tested once a month, every month). If you have a Basenji that DNA tests for Affected, then you still will need to start testing them monthly no later then age 3.

I have the same idea Maya. I have heard that there are very few carriers left in the world, and that the disease appears to have nearly been erradicated, BUT, to my way of thinking, if there are even a few carriers left in the world, then Im sure I would be the "lucky" one who would put carrier to carrier, so testing for me was VERY important… Im actually a bit anal about testing anyway :D

They should be both equally as accurate, but you just have to make sure that the dog hasn't eaten anything that was alive for a MINIMUM of an hour before the cheek swab, while it doesn't really matter for the blood test.

@etzbseder: Well, I got the results back yesterday, and they say that Medjai is "PROBABLY AFFECTED WITH FANCONI SYNDROME". So, now I get about one more year of little worry before I start strip testing and waiting for the inevitable. Hang in there. It is a tough road ahead. neither you nor your dog will understand the changes that can happen so suddenly… but know that it is not with malicious intent that they pee and pee and pee. There are so many supporting groups and people out there to help you and your B thru this. You can have a good life even with this sentence hanging over you. Best of luck. Enjoy your B as they are today... don't worry about tomorrow. I'll keep you and your Medjai in my thoughts.
