DNA testing for Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency…

    When I got some documentation from this company, it has a list of all the diseases that can be DNA tested for all the different breeds. Listed under the Basenji was Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency, (PK). (Interesting that Fanconi wasnt listed either :confused:)This stumped me as I had not heard of this disease in relation to the Basenji...

    Is this something that should be routinely tested for ??? I will be doing some "homework", in relation to this disease, but Im just interested in people's thoughts :) Do I need to get it done ???

    PK testing is for Hemolytic Anemia, mostly not seen in Basenjis today. Like Fanconi it is a recessive gene…. you can read about it at www.basenji.org or www.basenjihealth.org and it was a big problem 30 yrs ago (I may be wrong on the date.. it was before my time in Basenjis)

    @khanis: Hi Pedro, Check out this page that I made, it may clear things up for you: http://khanisbasenjis.com/fanconi.html I am not sure why you said IND between carrier and affected, as the IND is between a clear and a carrier. It just means that some of the genes are kind of weird and they aren't showing to be clear. It has to do with the DNA, not the test, and since this is a linkage test that is the best we can do for now. Kathy, At the 2007 Nationals Dr Johnson did say that while there have not been any dogs that tested IND between Carrier and Affected, he did say because this is not the direct test yet, it could happen, just has not. Lisa was correct in posting about that, I had totally forgotten him saying that when asked.

    @AC~Akeyla: I was wondering when we should have our 1 year old B's checked for Fanconi? For some reason I thought they had to be a certain age. And what is the best way to go about getting them tested? And you are most likely thinking of the urine test strips, which was the only way to detect Fanconi before the DNA Test that is now widely used. Since Fanconi is a late onset, usually it was recommended that Basenjis be strip test with urine test strips beginning no later then age 3 (and tested once a month, every month). If you have a Basenji that DNA tests for Affected, then you still will need to start testing them monthly no later then age 3.

    And chances are that your vet will tell you that there is no test. Just because it has been available for nearly two years does not mean that they know it is now here. You can do the fanconi tests without seeing a vet at all. Finger's crossed both your Bs come back NOT affected.

    @tsjoe007: Oops, Janneke, I hope you don't get a profile warning for answering my question in Dutch … :( Even if our English is not very good, especially with scientific explanations, let's give it a try anyway next time :rolleyes: Greetz Hey..hey.. my English is PER-FECT…. :mad: Hahaha.. ;) My German and French are 'not very good' :D :D (Four languages is just too much.. :p) I totally agree with Alex we should communicate in English here, also in the personal messages we send.     @jessi76: another vac I didn't see on your list is Lyme. Ask your vet about it IF tics are prevelant in your area. where I live, ALOT of dogs are coming down with Lyme disease (spread by deer tics), so I didn't even think twice about getting my dog the vaccine. although we keep him on a flea & tic preventative, the vaccine is another added precaution. like I said though, only if tics are an issue in your area. No, they don't seem to be a big deal here, the worst "pest" we have aside from fleas are chiggers or you may know of them as sand fleas. Thanks for you help.
