Stolen Basenji

Lost and Found Basenjis
  • Please cross post

Okay I need help. One of my Basenji puppy buyers had their puppy (15
months) stolen from their LOCKED vehicle at Summerset Travel Plaza on the Penn.

turnpike going eastbound. The person that was talking to them before hand was
driving a Tanker truck from Conneticut. The person was a black male. The
tanker truck did have a sleeper on it and it was a Mack Vision truck and it was

Dark blue. This happened on the 1st of April.

The Basenji is Brindle and white with a distinctive white area in his eye.
He goes by the name of "Joker". I will attached some pictures of him while
he was still here. Some where he was 16wks and the others where he was 7
months. He was placed in his companion home 2 months later.

The owners are devastated and very worried. He needs to be on a special
    diet.

Please please please crosspost everywhere you can.

    My home phone is 405-867-1244.

  • My hubby is a truck driver in that area so I called him right away he will keep an eye and let his friends who drive that area know as well. But those pics will help since none of them had heard of a basenji before.

  • Thanks so much, Sherrie. I did get the pics from my friend, (left you a message) but I hope you will contact me privately so I can e-mail them to you. They are bitmap images and I think they're too big to put on the forum. (I still haven't mastered getting pictures on here anyway!

  • Here are the pictures I got today.

Fingers and paws crossed that he is found and safely returned to his owners!

  • hi Terry
I sent you my email via your website. I took a pic from the screen of those pictures Kiroja posted and sent one to hubbys phone he can then send it to his friends phone. I also printed out a few pages of those pics to pass out at his work. I hope this has a happy ending

I'm so sorry to hear this. The Somerset exit on the PA Turnpike is about an hour away from where I live. That is the main highway that people use when going between Pittsburgh and Philly, DC or Baltimore. It is also a major route for interstate drug transport. I hope someone recognizes the dog and returns it to its rightful owners.

  • My son is an over the road trucker running cross country and quite often in the northeast - I will send the picture to him so he can keep his eye open for the stolen dog as well.

  • Any word on this B being spotted or found?

A good "safety" exercise to practice is a command that tells your dog treats are in the offing, and use it at irregular intervals when you are walking. Combine the command with a total release of pressure on the leash, preferably when your dog has firm tension on said leash. Then if something unexpected happens you have a built in reaction of the dog to look to you for a reward. This won't work if your dog is pursuing a major distraction, but should give you an edge if you have an equipment failure in otherwise neutral conditions. (you can carry this one step further by "accidentally" dropping the leash in a controlled area, or with a light line attached for safety, and practice until the dog turns to you when it feels a total release)

@Tayda_Lenny: LOL - Yep! Moved to Sacramento in March! I've been kind of MIA on the forums - it's been a crazy few months - got married in June (in Michigan) and have changed jobs TWICE since being here! Just changed my sig and location - so now I'm "officially" in California! :) Thanks, i was wondering why someone in Conn was going to foster a found dog in Cali. Is it strange for you with the water being on the wrong side and all? congrats on your new marriage and new jobs

I'm just glad I had a place to send her where she'd be okay. Without a rescue available, I would have had to either pass on her entirely at the shelter or make Lady miserable with a 60-pound dog waiting to eat her every time she stepped out of the crate. Everyone who can, please help out your local rescue, or at least just send them a thank-you email! I went to Karen's ranch, and they are quite full at the moment. Even so, they take great care of the dogs they have and work with quite a few sad and angry basenjis (and mixes!) to give them happier lives. I'll definitely be back to take one of them into my home for good.

That's a wonderful follow up, but we do need pics.
