@Abboud So cool! I share your excitement! Please post pictures when you pick the pup up. 🙂
New about to Get a Basenji Puppy of my Own
-
Also remember, according to what I have seen, these puppies are not American Kennel Club registered, but a registery that many puppy mills and Back Yard Breeders started because they didn't want to have to pay for the DNA parentage test that AKC requires for frequent breedings of dogs and bitches. AKC is really the only truly reconized registery in the US.
You might want to ask about AKC registration. And if there is AKC registration, ask her for the Sire and Dam's AKC registration numbers. You can then check out the pedigree. And many of us on the Forum are breeders and can help you look at a pedigree for health/temperament problems. -
She said that I can register his as AKC. I am getting the papers. I have till the week of valentines day so I have time… I did tell her the fanconi test with the cotton swab. Once she replies back or if it too impatient :p I'll ask is the sire or damn is AKC registered.
-
It is a cheek swab and she needs to get the instructions from www.basenjihealth.org
If you get the AKC numbers now, you can check out the pedigree.
-
She just ordered the test, and she will take him back if some bad does happen to him.
-
I believe this is good news she just told me that she ordered 4 of them for her pups, and registered at Canine Phenome Project.
-
Its nice that she says she will take him back. BUT will you be willing to let him go?
That is the issue with pets, not like taking a item back to the store.
We fall in love with our pets and having them sick hurts us all.
We are just trying to save you some pain down the road. -
I only said that because Tanza told me to ask… He is getting fanconi tested she ordered them, and registered.
-
Also if my pup can be AKC registered does that mean that either the mom or dad had to be registered?

Right.. and that was in case there was a problem with your Mom and Allergies… since you already had that experience... and certainly wouldn't want the pup to have to go into rescue or a shelter.
Also, by the way, Cuttiepie... I do totally agree with you about not letting the pup fly alone!!! I never ship puppies... people must come and pick them up...

Yes they do, both the Sire and Dam must be AKC registered, the litter must be AKC registered by the breeder and then they get the litter registration papers to give to the new owners.

That is, of course she has way more then 4 pups… and really she should be doing the sires and dams also.

My thoughts….
Our second basenji came from an accidental litter. We had a choice between a boy from the planned-for completely health tested litter, and a boy from an unplanned the litter. The latter pup did come from Fanconi tested parents because she cared enough to have all of her animals tested.
We ended up making our decision based on temperament and friendliness. But it was also highly important to me that for her planned litter she tested for Fanconi, hips and eyes. It was about the kind of breeding practices I wanted to support. Accidental litters can happen to the best of breeders. You want to find out what this breed means to the person bringing so many puppies into the world. I mean really how much do they really care...you may be completely sold on your individual puppy, but you're supporting someone who would rather keep that extra $130 than Fanconi test the parents, a detriment to the whole breed. In doing so they take the chance of bringing into the world a WHOLE LITTER of puppies at risk for Fanconi. This is not insignificant and something you can just brush off.
In cases like yours a back yard breeder that did not test the parents says they are willing to test your puppy. But you had to insist on it, it's not something they arrived at out of care and concern for the breed's health. And chances are they won't test their next litter.
Think about the kind of breeding practices you want to support. -
Next time I talk to her I will ask if she is testing the parents. All I know is that my pup is being tested… and thank you Tanza for agreeing with me on that... that is me on picking him up rather than shipping.

She also told me the story about how she first came across a basenji, and it was really touching…

You know, regardless how someone gets a breed or breeds… IMO, someone that is breeding three different breeds of dogs and has one breed with 3 litters, who know how many pups from the other breeds is only in it to make money. Sorry, but those really are the hard facts. Responsible breeders to not breed to make money, it is a hobby, we bred to better the breed, to get healthier dogs with great temperaments. We spend hours decided on breeding, who to breed to... and many of us don't even breed every year... because we know that we are personally responsible for every puppy produced and it could come to pass that we would have to take back everyone of them... and have to consider could we do that? While that is not really going to happen, it could... especially in these times...
So again, while it is everyone's own choice where to get a pup... hopefully you can understand why responsible breeders can't really support a breeder such as this and why some of us make sure a big deal about finding responsible breeders.
Sorry if this offends anyone, my apologies in advance if it does... but that is how I look at the situation.

I understand completely. Thank you so much for your advice. I have a couple weeks… If he is Fanconi clear, or carrier I will be happy. He wont have it... Also the parents pedigree... I will decide soon, but if you guys want I can still send pictures... she has been sending me pics of him getting older... Thanks again you guys.
