  • Hi there, and welcome for having us.

While researching dogs about a year ago, we came across the Basenji's. I immediately fell in love with their looks. After reseaching their character and temperament, it became even worse. Then my wife found Shasta, a Shi-Tzu/Maltese mix and we ended up with her. She is a great dog with a wonderful personality, and wouldn't want to miss her for the world anymore!

But the Basenji's keep getting my attention. We finally contacted a breeder, which took as under their wings into the world of Basenji's. She brought us into contact with a Junior owner, who had three dogs and needed to place them fast. After meeting with her at the breeder's house, we introduced Shasta to Serena, a beautiful six-year old brindle girl. And they just hit it off!!

So a year went by, but we ended up with a Basenji! And she's just terrific. We've had her at the house for about two weeks now, and adjusting just greatly!

Thanks for letting me share our story here:)

I hear ya. Our girls are all spayed which eliminated that problem, now we're fighting weight issues.:(

  • Welcome to the forum. The Basenji is truly a special breed. I was fortunate to stumbled across a basenji/whippet mix at my local animal shelter. Things at home are never boring when you own a basenji. Post some pics when you can.

  • I don't know what happened, but my pic that I posted is gone, so is my post.

To the person that replaied to the pic andwanted to know her full name: it's Moonlyte's Simply Serena.

    Will post another pic:)

@rgk9ruler My B detested her Crate unless we were in the car going someplace. They must get into the Crate for Vets, etc. Give them something to chew on and put the Crate so they can see you. Practice taking short trips so they will get used to it. These Dogs are so curious that they like new things! It worked for my Dog because I always want all of my Animals to be safe! :) A

She has been fixed. As for the falconi, I dont think any of the basenjis that I have have every been tested for it. as for the country hounds and hearts place. I went by the address listed on the site and it appears that no one has been there for a while. Very scary looking place.. overgrown, strange smell, fence pieced together with kennel/crate doors, vacant car. I called the number and it was disconnected and I tried a second number and have been waiting for over a week for someone to call back. We are going to give it the college try to get her "normal" but I want to make sure that I am not doing her a dis-service. I have time before we are slated to move but I also want to make sure that she would be happy. I know deep down that I have not been a great owner to her but I love her very much and don't want to see her harmed in any way. Thanks everyone for the coments and suggestions

Welcome, Andyboy! I too had see the movie and loved it as a kid. I haven't seen it in years so I don't remember it. I have the book though and plan to read it with my daughter this summer. The movie introduced me to the breed, but it was ultimately allergies that led me to own one, much like JazzysMom. Enjoy the forum…I know I do. Post more pictures when you can!
