Does your Basenji go umph?

Basenji Talk
  • When Jazz is startled she'll make a quick "wup" noise, and it's always just one sound and that's it. I've only heard her do it three times in the two years we've had her.

  • yeah people ask me so, he's the barkless dog, and I answer yeap but he makes other noises and I find myself trying to immitate the noises..yeah pretty funny.

  • I tell people that they don't bark, and mine doesn't yodel. She does "talk" to us when we come home {that little "growly" noise}
But when annoyed at the other dog she does sound more like a Tasmanian Devil than any other dog I've ever heard.

My best friend loves that noise, and loves being here when I bring home groceries. Jazzy guards the grocery bags {large family = lots of bags on floor while things are being put away} from Gypsy. No action, but LOTS of noise. LOL

  • My daughter Natalie said the other day, "Mommy, Nala just meowed! She really is a cat-dog!!" It was when she was yawning…I've heard it before, but never thought of it as a "meow". LOL!!!

  • yes catdog that's one of the other names we give our B. lol

  • we call ours man cat LOL

  • Max burps too and snorts. He's just funny. I've never had a dog like him. Ot seems like every Basenji is spoiled rotten:)

  • our felakuti goes barooooooo when he is very very happy. :) we decided to get that little female basenji at Debbie's Petland, the one with the 5 toes..We have named her Queen Nyahbinghi after a warrior queen of the 19th century in Uganda…her call name is Nyah. :) so now we have two lovedoveys. :)

  • Congrats on your new puppy. I think 2 is definately better than one. Post some pictures.

  • Congrats on your new pup. :D

It's very sad the circumstances you had to get her but I understand these poor pups pull on your heart strings even though you know that helping them only supports the terrilbe business that brought her there.

    I like her name too!

Congrats on the new one-I wondered how long you could hold out! When you talked of her shivering and being so lonely-I kinda figured you'd be having a new addition.

Good luck with your pup….. hopefully you got her for a reasonable price... I would be interested to know if AKC papers came with her... and what the breeding is, if available.... also would hope that with the time she spent in the Pet Store, this will show them that a Basenji is not a good business decision.....

I always vary feeding time a bit. It is a trick I learned after the first show with my horse... He was not a happy camper when one of his classes delayed dinner time. Being less rigid with the time and more rigid with a routine has made the time change a non-issue (though the horses have not had to learn to sit, they do have to wait for me to give the 'eat' signal before they get their grain like my b's have to wait for their 'eat' command).

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

She-Ra goes to the door, then looks over her shoulder at us. Problem is, sometimes she's playing a game with us, where she just wants to see if we'll get up and open the door. We're putting a stop to that by putting her out forcibly if she starts to walk away so she knows if we get up to open the door she's going out. Period.
