Allergic reaction or stress?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Last week a few minutes before training Mirtillo had a bump on his nose. It disappeared after the training. This morning he got this bump again during the training and he also has a swollen lip.

We started giving him fish oil on the saterday before last weeks training.
I'm not sure, but I have the feeling his lips are a bit swollen after eating the fish oil, but only on the days of the training he also has a swollen nose :S

Is it an allergic reaction to the fish oil? Stress? Or a combination?

He gets the fish oil, because he has a lot of dander. We agreed with the vet to give the oil first and if this doesn't help, we will change food (we will go raw).

Shall I stop giving the oil or just wait and see for another week?

    Pictures of his nose:

  • I would say an allergic reaction to something. I have never seen a bump like that from stress. Looks to me like a bite of some kind

Yeah, last week we also thought it was a bite.. but it's pretty weird that it happens twice during training.. and nowhere else.

  • Does he get it any other time he travels in the car? I'm thinking it might be allergies in the vehicle.

No, I thought about that too… We travel a lot by car... It can't be the car..

  • It does sound like an allergy though, could be spring allergy.

Actually, it sounds to me like there is either a bug or plant or something at where you train that he is allergic to. The fact that the reaction happens very specifically when you go to one location would tend to support that there is something at that location that he is allergic to.

There are different types of rabies vaccine. The ones most likely to cause a reaction have thimerosal in them. A friend's dog (not a Basenji) had an anaphylactic reaction to a rabies shot, and she would have lost him had the vet not still been present and able to counter it with epinephrine. In the future they made sure the shots he got did not have thimerosal. Usually reactions aren't quite so dramatic, but something to keep in mind. I also used blood titers to avoid unnecessary vaccinations with my dogs. More expensive, but worth it!

Kipawa had this happen with one of his shots. It took about 2 months to go away, and started to really reduce in size with massage. The area is perfectly fine now - you'd never know anything odd had been there.

I am so glad I happened on this thread! We are leaving for an extended trip and the idea of the baby rice cereal and meats is a wonderful suggestion - I am right now in the process of trying to get my girl over a diahrrea problem - have been making the hamburg/rice/cottage cheese up, but as was said, on the road that will be a problem. This Forum is a great place for help, and thanks, guys/girls.

I guess we have been lucky. Roo got his Rabies shot about 3 weeks ago and was fine. We also used Advantix on him with no issues. With the flooding we have had here recently, the Mosquitos have been terrible. We even stopped walking in the park because they are so bad and will swarm on Roo. Jason

Judy Schor's agility champion, Peaches, suffered a significant adverse reaction to a rabies booster. Judy has posted photos of Peaches and a letter from the vaccine manufacturer, Fort Dodge, offering a settlement to pay for medical treatment if they not disclose information about the claim. You can read the letter and see photos of Peaches at this link: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2042916&id=1447415540&ref=mf .
