Test strip question for fanconi..

  • I went to drug mart and asked for glucose test strips.. i told them i was testing for sugar in the urine.. they gave me bayer clinistix.. I've heard to look for bayer diastix?? does anyone know if the clinistix test for the right thing? the bottle says "Clinistix reagent strips for urinalysis- glucose" anyone know??

  • If the bottle says for urinalysis then they are the right thing, that would be for glucose

  • Ok thanks- just double checking because i never heard the name clinistix before, but it says both urinalysis and glucose on it..

  • and this isnt really relevant, but how do you pronounce fanconi? I've never heard anyone say it, i've just read about it.. and when talking to the vet i want to make sure i say it right :)

  • You might want to just do the DNA test.. and then you don't have to worry about strip testing…. unless the DNA test shows affected

  • tanza- I'm planning on doing the DNA test.. I just graduated from college and my full-time job doesnt start till July, so money is tight right now.. but i'm planning on doing it as soon as i start to get some income.. so until then i'm strip testing..

  • I have a question about those test strips as a friend asked about them. Do they work just to indicate whether glucose is in the urine (bad thing for fanconi) or is there a level of glucose that should not be exceeded?

No glucose at all should be detected in a Basenji or any dog… any glucose indicates possible Fanconi for a Basenji (then verified by Blood gases) or Diabetes (then verified by blood tests), which Basenjis can get as do other dogs. There should not be glucose in the urine for any dog...

  • Okay thanks for clearing that up for me - I'll pass on the info.

I use the Clinistix because to me there was a more drastic change in the colors. There's only 3 color variations and it goes from pink to purple..not green to a little darker green in the first color change.

@JustJunie: Hi, I am new. I am owned by 3 basenji's, one of which was just adopted. I was told that he has that disease and that I need to have a blood test every 6 months. Do you think this is the one that costs $60? I would like to take as good of care as I can for Banjo and I really do not understand all of the ins and outs. I was told to feed him bananas to keep his potassium up, but alas he doesn't seem interested in them. Any information you could share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Hello! I was hoping we would see you on this site!! Thanks so much for adopting Banjo there!! He has quite a long thread (in the Rescue/Adoption forum) of admirers. We would love to see pics of the gentleman. :)

@tanza: I did send you an email, but it is good to repeat here, I think. The protocol for treatment of Fanconi, information about Fanconi, information about strip testing can be found both at www.basenji.org and www.basenjihealth.org Thank you so much for the info to pass on.

@dmcarty: re: puppy mills and testing only one parent - I know for a FACT that at one place the sire of several years of litters was not the sire - it was a male who had good papers so his name was listed even though he was DEAD. One of the PM's males was the sire of several litters attributed to this OTHER dog. (I happen to know the person who owned the substitute sire) So it is unfortunate but the testing will only be as ethical as those who provide information to the test. Geez I hate to even say that but I am afraid that it's true. No doubt about that… and another reason to only look at AKC who has a DNA parentage program for high volume breeders...
