Basenji Talk
  • The past few weeks have had me rather busy. I am trying to prepare to graduate this year and my finals begin next week.
Much has happened in our Basenji’s life and I wanted to take a few minutes to share what has been going on.
This past weekend I took Chance to NOTRA up in Livermore to practice. I want to get his JC but previous attempts at this were unsuccessful. He would either dart off the track and go after a bird or just chase the other dogs and not the lure. This time he actually was interested in the lure and could care less about the other dogs. He ran the entire track and was focused on the lure. He did it twice and while muzzled too! It was great to see. At the end of the month I hope to have him JC’d so he can officially race.

Kiya started her confirmation classes and she is doing so good. She seems to really enjoy prancing around. I entered her in the puppy sweeps towards the end of the month. We have been practicing self stacking. We will have to see how she does. I let her run a practice run around the track while in Livermore the other weekend and at first she was afraid of the lure but she saw her brother chasing it and decided she could do it too. She ran the entire track and from the looks of it…I may have another B who likes it too! I think its going to be a busy year for our B’s :)

Don't forget to send your entries for JC tests for Chance and Puppy Match for Kiya…. you can find the premiums on the BCONC page under events. www.norcalbasenjis.org

  • Also, I would suggest that once he gets his JC you do not jump into running in competition until he has more time to practice with other hounds…and make sure he is focused on the lure and not on the other dogs running...

I know that you will get lots of different opinions on this, but IMO, I think it is really important that any hound running is for sure totally focused and understands what is going on in the field.

And I think it is great that he was running with a muzzle...

  • I completely agree. Its best to make sure he is fully focused on the lure. The muzzle was what worried me though…it was his first time wearing it and he did not seem to mind it. The lure was far more important :)
Thanks for the info...I'll get them registered soon.

Ah ok cool thanks, I had something like that when Safi was smaller and it was the most successful for sure. She outgrew it quite quickly though

I can't listen to that, it would wake my girl up and well... I'm not into a "sing along" just now. ;) I will say that many canines howl and yodel and bay (at the moon, whenever a fire truck passes, etc.). I'm not certain that any one breed is distinctive enough to have a sound all their own, but many a proud owner would probably assert so.

We use ones from Rukka. Not sure if they’re available everywhere but they are they best ones we have tried (others always fell off, especially in deep snow). I think having two Velcro closures on each sock has been key. I also prefer the soft shell ones as our B seems to accept them more and they don’t twist as much as the ones with a hard sole. Here are the ones I am referring to: https://rukkapets.com/paw-wear/thermal-shoes-black

My undergraduate degree was in geophysics with a minor in applied math. I name all my Basenjis after Indian mathematicians. My current Basenjis are Madhava of Sangamagrama (Madhava for short) and Bramagupta (Bramagupta for short). They do respond to their "short" names.
