Wanna go for a walk?

Basenji Talk
  • Whenever it's time to take Dingo for a walk, and if it's me taking him it means he's going to the park to run run run which he loves of course. My phsycho dog will play this crazy game where he'll run away from me in the house when it's time to put his harness on. It's not like the harness is too tight or hurting him in any way and he knows he's going to go off leash in about 5 minutes once we get to the park. He'll get close to me and and kind of "paw" at me like a cat would do and not until I get very stern with him will he get close enough so I can put the harness on. He even knows that I've got a pocket full of doggy treats but that's not enough to persuade him. This is one ritual that I can do without!

  • best suggestion is desensitize him from what the harness means, start putting it on him at random times and then not go out. Then work to putting it on him and not going to the park but on a regular walk, and keep doing it, of course throw in there of actual park time.

Try just setting it on your coffee table at one point, then a little later scoop him up and put the harness on, then just leave it at that, take it off him later. Then set the harness somewhere else another time, then scoop him up and put it on again at random.

  • rocky LOVES going outside.. and he will NOT come to me to get his collar/leash on! lol he runs around like he wants me to chase him.

I dont know in terms of distance but mine usually go at least an hour and have gone 2 or more if its cool. I think they would walk all day if I had the time because they never want to go back home though once we get home they will plop down and go to sleep like they are exhausted. Gee mom is just so mean for dragging them all over the neighborhood and keeping them away from their sleep. As was mentioned chief being tri (9 months) feels the heat more than my r/w zoe but now that the days are cooler he keeps up with her fine.

Dan is right. Most people do not know what constitutes good manners with dogs. I can say from experience that AJ feels more secure when he's leashed and will act more confidently. Maybe I'm his security blanket. However, when people allow their animal to rush another that is leashed and try to say the dog is just being friendly need to review Dog Etiquette 101 and try again. I think the main point here is to underscore the need for people to leash their animals until they are in a safe area for them to run. That woman in the business park is asking for trouble letting her dogs off lead. She is lucky all Buddy wants to do is play. Maybe one day she will run into one of those Pit Bulls or Rotties or Aussie Cattle Dogs who will not put up with her dogs' behavior and correct it. Of course, then she will complain loudly to anyone who will listen and try to get a law passed to ban whatever breed of dog "attacked" hers when it rushed a dog on a leash.

Yes Otis is a junk food junkie..I guess since he eats raw, when he steals it better be good tasty, not so good for you food.. Today Otis is not feeling hip at all, he wouldn'ty eat his breakfast and he just threw up twice on our nice newish dogbed…great.. Poor baby, and it is his 9 mo old birthday today...

Tillo doesn't like the rain as well. We pick him up, and put him on the grass. Than it's ok and he will walk for 5 - 10 minutes. Since monday we bring him to the 'baby'sitter during daytime. She didn't know about the 'picking him up', so he didn't want to go out.. and peed in the house…. ;)

@felakuti: our felakuti goes barooooooo when he is very very happy. :) we decided to get that little female basenji at Debbie's Petland, the one with the 5 toes..We have named her Queen Nyahbinghi after a warrior queen of the 19th century in Uganda…her call name is Nyah. :) so now we have two lovedoveys. :) Good luck with your pup….. hopefully you got her for a reasonable price... I would be interested to know if AKC papers came with her... and what the breeding is, if available.... also would hope that with the time she spent in the Pet Store, this will show them that a Basenji is not a good business decision.....
