Can anyone take in a 13 Year old?

Basenji Rescue
  • Our family is breaking up this summer (daughter to residential college, no pets; parents to Zurich, no pets).
Bingo is a 13 year old purebred, red/white neutered male and mellow for his breed. He's always lived with we three very different people and will sleep with any of us or on a couch. His hearing seems dulled, and he has mild arthritis.
He's past the bad habit of chewing things but aggressive toward other dogs on the street (always walked on a leash of course). He lives fraternally with a tabby cat and a younger yorkipoo.
Bingo enjoys a fenced back yard but its freezing now. He'll follow the sun from the house windows and lie in it when possible. Mostly he sleeps. He hates being kenneled.
How can we best place him?
    Please advise.

  • You need to contact BRAT (Basenji Rescue www.basenjirescue.org) for assistance

  • Are you one of the parents going to Zurich? or are you staying around?
What is happening with the cat and the yorkiepoo?

  • Yes…we have no other family up North. We hope to place the yorkipoo with a member of my wife's family in Texas but she hasn't asked them yet. The tabby I hope to find a home for here in Ft. Wayne with a cat lover by adv. and vets office. Why do you ask?

  • Have you tried calling the breeder yet? And if that doesn't work, I would suggest BRAT (www.basenjirescue.org)

  • Contact BRAT and fill out the request to surrender form. They will place him with a foster home until they find a perfect home for him.
How does he do with other male dogs? and how is he with other cats? Is he an excaper? How is his health?
BRAT is a wonderful organization that will make sure he gets placed in a great home. They also are a great resourse for the new owner if there are any "issues" since you will not be around.
    When are you moving?

  • I believe in his posts (see above) it was summer…

  • I posted private responses and forgot to update this thread. We have the application for IN Basenji Rescue and I've talked to them by phone and I think everything will be fine for Bingo to go there. I'm expecting to move in June-August…nothing is "signed" yet.

Great, thanks for letting us know and wish all the best for Bingo

  • Have you looked into taking your pets with you?

I would take her in a heartbeat if I had room.. unfortunately I'm pushing my limits with my father already, as I've saved a few cats while living with him again. She sounds like a wonderful dog. I have no doubt that the bites were provoked. Dogs, especially Basenjis, can be very sensitive. If you don't understand that you're dealing with an animal that has feelings too, you're in trouble. I will keep her in my prayers. May she find the best fur-ever home!

Advertised as an African dog! Owners did not know what type of dog they were buying. This is near Amish country-only 25 miles away from Lancaster and I wonder if they bought her from a local breeder. Has anyone contacted them to find out any additional information like registration, breeder, etc.? Jennifer

I noticed that too. I just thought that maybe it was someone that offered to post the ad for the owner.
