For those that sleep in the bed

Basenji Talk

  • The nightly ritual (after our walk):

    1. Mom and Dad get into bed and She-Ra sits at the foot gnawing on her chew/bone/toy for a while.
    2. Baths for Daddy and occasionally Mommy. Mainly Daddy…I must have a high salt content on my skin or something.
    3. After a good forehead licking, it's time to figure out where to sleep. Usually it's with Mommy but occasionally she'll curl up with me...almost always somewhere in the middle of the bed.
    4. The good part...when she's down, SHE'S DOWN. She doesn't move the entire night until I get up to feed the cats (and her).

  • Nala is usually in bed with the first person to hit the sheets. Under the covers in between their legs or in the "crook" behind bent knees. She'll get up occasionally (to lure visiting Bs out of bed…?..hee hee) or to get a drink and then jump up or scratch the bed to get us (usually DH) to let her under the covers. She usually does, as my kids call it..."spin, spin, spin, spin....plop!"
In the a.m., if my parents are visiting and sleep "in", she will abandon the empty bed and go bother them to let her under their covers! Ah...a dog's life!!

  • what % of basenjis always want to sleep in the bed? and how does that work play out on nights when their owners want to be "romantic". will they flip out because you locked them out the room and try to ruin the moment. that might sound like a joke but im dead serious haha. im trying to get full understanding of what im getting in to if i get one. Just by reading all these stories it make me think they are smart enough to try ruining the moment

Great question:D :D :D Timing is everything!;) Ah, the beauty of crate training!

I guess you put them in their crates or they get to ruin your moment.:D

uh…100% of our basenjis ALWAYS want to sleep in the bed...but unfortunately for them, only 33% - 50% of them do on any given night ;)

You can definitely train them to sleep in the crate occasionally or always...most basenjis do fine with crate training at night. Or you can just work around them when you are feeling romantic...though, IME, you really can't work around more than two ;) or you can shove them off the bed...or you could be romantic in the bathtub (basenjis won't follow you there!)

I suppose it might be different if it was a dating situation, rather than a married situation. Might be hard to impress a possible mate with dogs lounging around on the bed, and turning into little statues impossible to be moved.

Basenjis aren't so impossible to live with that you have to change your whole life...YOU just have to decide what works for you..and then find a way for the dogs to be happy too. Most of us find it is easier to change our habits, than to change the habits of the dogs...but if you are dedicated and energetic you CAN train these dogs :)

    Excellent!:D

  • Hubby and I give the dogs nice chewies and shut the bedroom door, when we need to "get" together.
Once that is over, the b's come in and snuggle under the covers with us.

    Clever girl!

  • hmmm ok… good to know. thats doable thanks a lot guys

    Clever girl!

That reminds me of Jurassic Park…y'know..when the velociraptors are about to eat the "zoo keeper" ;)

  • I love my basenji heater in bed with me…. especially since it has gotten down to 29 degrees here the past couple of nights!! We finally had to turn the heat on too!!

I gave up on beds in crates long ago. Now I buy thick fleece blankets and they do rip them a bit but they are still useable. My boys are adults though. When they were pups my red boy made a few beds explode. [image: 1472562228370-image.png] These blankets are from Walmart and were recommended by my breeder. $5 for a twin blanket and they are surprisingly comfy. If your girl is eating the beds/blankies as she shreads that's a different issue and I'd be hesitant to use anything.

I was interested to see this post. I have currently 2 B. gals, Tootsie and Peanut. Tootsie by day is a yodeling lunatic, but sleeps like a rock. Peanut, on the other hand is mostly silent, except for an occasional growl when needed, and has been that way for the 4 years we've had her. About 3 or 4 times in the past year, though, we will wake up to the most mournful, creepy howl I've ever heard.. Pea 'sleep howling' I guess you'd call it! It truly sounds a bit "other worldly" and it always makes me hope she isn't having a really bad doggie dream!

@Lenora: He sounds pretty typical basenji to me Cheryl. They want to be where you, and make themselves completely comfortable on you. Abbey used to be a terrible mouther when she was little (she's 3 now) and I taught her No Bite. Kiss. When she'd start to mouth at my hand or whatever, I'd say No Bite, Kiss, and she would give me a little lick instead. I too use the No Bite, Kisses and he is getting there. If he gets too rough, I just pull away and ignore him, it doesn't take long before he will reach over and give a gentle kiss. I am having so much fun with him. He is the most loving dog I have ever owned and we are learning lots from each other. Yesterday he "saved" me from the UPS truck! He saw it pull up outside on the curb and he set off with a series of barks that hit a pitch that hurt! Of course once he saw the man get out, he was all wiggles and wanting to play with him. :)

All three pups sleep in bed with us. We bought two double beds and stuck them togeather so we could all fit. It's still crowded. My next dog IS going to sleep in a crate!
