Jumoke Basenjis

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I've been thinking I should write a review of the breeder we got Jazzy from, if for no other reason than he's in this community  , but am not exactly sure what is being looked for here.

I think it is obvious from previous posts that I am very, very happy with our decision to buy our puppy from Jumoke Basenjis.

We did visit other breeders before deciding to buy from Bryan and Laurie at Jumoke Basenjis. It was a pretty easy decision for us. On the home visit, we saw healthy, happy, friendly dogs in a clean environment, and talking to Bryan about the breed was like opening an encyclopedia. He had so much information and knowledge about the history, care, potential health problems and how they would be treated, etc. There was no question we had that he couldn't answer immediately.

The sales agreement that we signed was thorough, and the terms of sale had stipulations that would insure the pup was being placed in a good, safe home. Requirements for spay/neuter, microchip {with Jumoke listed as secondary contact}, indoor humane care, and that the pup will not be sold or given away, donated to shelters, research facilities, etc were included. If the buyer is unable to care for the dog, it can be returned to Jumoke; if that return takes place w/in 3 yrs a partial refund of the purchase price may be given.

A hereditary health guarantee of ten years {!!} is given {with the exception of Fanconi}, allowing for replacement of a similar dog or refund {Jumoke's decision}.

The follow-up contact with Jumoke has been outstanding. Bryan has been available, via telephone or email, to answer any question and advise me with any behavior issues that have come up – and I've had a lot of questions.
and Jazzy's affection for Bryan, even after a year and a half of living with us, is obvious every time she sees him.

I would recommend Jumoke wholeheartedly to anyone serious about buying a Basenji. Bryan and Laurie are careful, quality breeders. They produce outstanding dogs.

If I ever manage to convince my husband he wants another one, I'd want it to be a Jumoke baby.

  • You can't go wrong with one the the Jumoke lines.

Yeah you told me about that before and I'm clueless, but I'll try it if I need to, lol. could be the noise of occasional thump, could be they can hear it even tho we can't. My chow would be drooling buckets before we got a mile away. I just had to keep towels down and take off and bag along the trip. But I took her for a 7 hr trip to atlanta and she threw up and threw up, then stopped. Never threw up again. :( on your back. I had been getting radiofrequency ablations in the US, and they really helped. But doctors here will only do them once or twice. I have had at least 6 on one side, 3 on the other. :( But it's miraculous pain relief when it is done right. Maybe your dog acupuncturists knows of a human one they'd recommend?

It's most likely a yeast infection. They get it in the ears quite often. Buddy has a yeast infection right now on his stomach.

My C3 has the same itchy skin problems too mostly due to the 1001 allergies he has…but I use the Aveeno Oatmeal Ointment to help calm the itch & I also put Brewers Yeast tablets & Fish Oil tablets into his food to help keep his skin & coat healthy. Sometimes we need to bathe regularly (like once a week ) in the Aveeno oatmeal shampoo to help as well. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the encouraging words. We have been running him with our other dogs in our yard, we have about half acre or so, and he is fast..He loves it, just don't think he is used to out heat yet, it is already about 85+ degrees and very humid…I think he looks good, he is definitely babychunky, not fat, but what I envision a puppy looking like before he grows into his own body. We will keep up with what we have done so far and see what he turns out like...can't be bad, just beautiful.. Basenjimamma

An update on Ben's condition. He had his teeth cleaned this morning and the vet had to remove several teeth. A large tooth in the back of the mouth had a cavity that went all the way to the root. He never lost his appetite during the whole ordeal or seemed to have any sensetivity of his mouth. I hope this is the end of the suffering he was going through. He was a rescue dog so we don't have the previous owners records as to dental care he had in the past. You can be sure he will be monitored from here on out for any sign of tooth decay or tarter build up. Thanks to everyone who replyed to my inquiry on Basenji health.
