Bald Basenji

Basenji Talk

  • My Jojo had to have an area on her neck shaved by her vet so she could draw some blood on her last vet visit the first week of April. Jojo still is bald where the vet shaved her hair. Now, she is my first B so I was wondering if their hair (fur) grows slower than other breeds:confused: The area now has a sore on it form her collar rubbing it so I have removed the collar and I put anitbiotic ointment on it and monitoring closely. I have had other breeds before but I don't seem to remember their fur growing so slow…

  • I would guess that because of the collar you have the bald spot and the reason that the hair has not grown in is because the collar was rubbing on it…. Their hair doesn't grow slower then other breeds....

  • I found out my german shepherd mix had a low thyroid level after the vet shaved her, and I mentioned to the vet it was taking a long time for her hair to grow back. They tested her and found out her thyroid was low, and then she took thyroid pills. Both my german shepherd and basenji ended up taking thyroid pills–but this was when they were older dogs. Also--my vet at that time told me that that depending on the growth cycle of the hair--it may take longer for the hair to grow back.

  • Well all Basenjis should be check for Thyroid… it is a problem in the breed. and be aware that complete Thyroid tested is more then the normal blood test that Vet typically do that only has the T4

Thyroid problems can most certainly effect Basenjis from as early as age 2 and under........

  • Jojo is 11 and she does have hypothyroidism and is on Soloxene for it…I didn't think of that...she gets her levels done again in Sept...they apparently were fine in April...we'll see...thanks for the input...

  • And not unsual for the dog of Jojo's age to have hypothyroidism …

  • It took a long time for my B's hair to grow back after their spay/neuter.

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
