Male puppy Ohio or nearby?

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • Hello my family is looking for a male puppy to bring home. My son has allergies and we don't want just any dog. I have fallen in love with Basenjis and we don't want to have to wait a whole year...or 6+ months. We will if we have to.

  • Are you sure your son won't be allergic to Basenjis? Best way to know is to be around them and see whether he reacts. They may be less likely to trigger allergies than some other breeds, but the only way to be sure is to expose your son to one.

Hopefully you have researched the breed thoroughly. They are definitely not for everyone, and require more effort, patience, and ingenuity on your part than many other breeds.

  • We are not aware yet. That is why we are looking to find someone nearby so that we can be around a Basenji before committing. We would never bring him home before knowing he is a good fit for out family.

  • There are a lot of breeders in Ohio. Check out the BCOA website and maybe join some basenji facebook groups.

    Where in Ohio are you?

  • The Basenji Rescue And Transport (BRAT) FB group is at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/42698328416/ Check it out and join, there's lots of Basenjis in OH.

  • Try CarolAnn Worsham in Urbana, OH. Say Len has put you on to her. Good luck.

  • Basenjis are not hyperallergic. Basenjis shed and have dander. Make sure that you spend time with them and more than one time. If allergies are a possible issue, I always give people a hand towel that the Basenjis have had.. to take home. Especially telling if you take that towel and put it under your pillow at night. You can find breeders at www.basenji.org and search by state. Basenjis typically only come in season once a year and this is the reason that you are not likely to find any this time of year

@liz-falzone Not sure if you are one of the 60 or so would-be Basenji puppy purchasers who has emailed me privately - PC is in the hospital and I am working on my laptop so can't access the list. But that alone does tell you a great deal ! I haven't bred a litter for 12 years now but am still getting enquiries - current breeders are also inundated. We have been weeding through enquirers, putting many people off this challenging breed if they should perhaps look elsewhere, and filling lists of known 2020 winter breeders. Many have been accepting visitors and establishing a relationship. And have closed lists. But breeders this winter seem to be holding their cards close to their chests, Rescues have been rehomed and Breed Clubs don't have many intended pairings listed. I may be able to help but need to know a great deal more about you - location, knowledge of the breed, children, working from home etc. My email addresses are on the websites listed in my signature bloc

I think Tanza is spot on. Not sure where you are, but the Basenji Nationals are in Tucson in November. Assuming it's possible, I can't think of a better way to find a good breeder than to attend.

Go to www.basenji.org and search by state. Most likely you can find a breeder that might have or be breeding Black/White...

Have you been on the Basenji Club of America website? There is a listing of breeders that you could contact and many will place a pup in Mexico. It is a good site to visit and become familar with health concerns in the breed and also how to find a responsible breeder. www.basenji.org By the way, your English is very good.

I would look at the BCOA site for reputable breeders in your area, but don't be quick to rule out others. A lot of good breeders have all their puppies spoken for by now, so that will make your search much harder. But keep looking and don't be afraid to contact folks from all over. The most important thing is to find a good breeder that you can work with personally, and one who does significant health testing, including the new DNA marker for fanconi. A happy healthy puppy and supportive relationship with a breeder are priceless! I do know some folks will ship, but the best thing to do is go out and get the dog. You will probably want to meet the breeder and litter, and they will want to meet you. That way you can get a better feel for each other and both still have an "out" if things don't seem right. For about the same price as shipping a dog, you can get a plane ticket yourself to get them. It usually only costs about $50 or so to add the dog in cabin on your return trip. And then you are in complete control the whole time of what is happening to your puppy. Also sometimes breeders that live outside your area still have ways to make transportation arrangements. You can always check. They know other breeders that live between you two and can meet up with them at shows or events to get the puppy closer to it's new home, or within a reasonable driving distance of you. My first dog came from Georgia, but I only had to go to KY to get him. :)
