Heartworm and Flea treatment comparison , cost?

Basenji Talk
  • I have 3 basenjis, and when I traveled a lot and they were boarded, and I I used Heartguard for the heartworms and NexGard for flea control, which is very expensive. MY pack stay out side, they prefer that. I bath them occasionally , and we dog park about 2 a month, other than that they are not exposed to other dogs.

What do most of you owners use for Flea protection that's less expensive and works well?

  • For Heartworm I use NuHeart ivermectin made in NZ. About $13.00 for a 6 pack of pills, available on line and without a scrip from the Vet. I give one pill every 5 to 6 weeks year roung. Or you can use liquid ivermectin, I believe the dose is 1/2 cc every 6 wks, even cheaper.
For fleas/ticks I use Frontline Plus. Lucky that we don't have a real flea problem, so only have to use 2 or 3 times a year.
I would not use any of the chewable flea meds, I do not believe they are safe

@roguecoyote That's funny....just this morning I had Binti out for her first thing in the morning pee and the grass was still wet. She walked a little then went back to the street without peeing. She returned to the grass to pee and when she came back to the street she had to sniff each of her OWN pawprints!!!!! These guys are a crack up!!!!

I also use frontline spray, it's easy to use a minimal amount and I spray Kaiser mainly along his back where he can't lick, he runs around like a nutter so will have to confine him next time as it was hit and miss last time as I was thinking if I did it outside he wouldn't smell it so much, wrong he hated the spray sound and the smell, did make me laugh heaps him running around like a crazy dog and me trying to spray him as he ran past. Have always only used it more through summer( especially with the cats snoozing outside then) and hardly through winter but he seems to pick up fleas on our walks so need to get a flea comb. Don't really like using anything but don't like fleas either. Jolanda and Kaiser

I haven't read the whole thread, but I understand a bit about the 'cost' of owning a basenji. It sometimes goes beyond what one might think of as 'normal' dog costs. I lost a lazyboy chair and quite a few clothes to my first fella. My second and current guy, not so much. I spent many dollars on their health; first guy had heartworm when I got him; just got past having a large fatty tumor removed from the leg of my current guy. I haven't been on the forum in a while but what I came on to say was; none of this matters…I had a pretty crappy day of a whole bunch of little things that amount to nothing individually, but taken together - crappy. When all was done and I came home, my boy was happy to see me, played with me, 'listened' to me and made me happy. That is priceless! BTW: Mods, I like the new color scheme, FWIW.

@Pilotbasenji: pretty sure akc registered, ill get back to you as soon as i can, ill have to find out for sure if it was 1 month, but im absolutely positive that hes a purebreed basenji. besides the fact that hes not very bright, he got out once and chased a car down the street, ive read somewhere that basenjis like to chase cars. Well, honestly, Basenjis are very bright… too bright for their own good, as they are a "thinking" dog being a sighthound. And while we lose Basenji to getting hit by cars, I personally don't know any that really like to chase them?.. they chase critters, other dogs, cats, and sometime leafs in the wind, but cars?... not usually... IMO... What you usually hear about Basenjis and cars is that they are not "car smart" in the street and don't respect cars.. as some dogs might

Well, the problem with fly spray either for horses or humans for that matter would be that they can lick it off… and not only on themselves but each other... and we know how Basenjis can lick... I would be kind of leary of a spray....
