Does anyone use a cooling/ reflective coat for their Tri, Brindle, or B&W Basenji

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I would think after dark that colour would be irrelevant, but boy, at 100 + F I am the one who isn't going out for very long, never mind the dog needing a cooling coat! It isn't often we get up to or over 100 degrees here, although 90 can feel pretty bad when it's humid. When we are doing hay, I use a cooling neck wrap which certainly does help when you're working in the hay mow and the heat most definitely gets up past 100 degrees! If I had a reason for my dog to be out and exerting himself in those temperatures, I expect I might consider something for him, as long as it wasn't too cumbersome. I had a look at the Chillybuddy cooling jacket and was happy to see it does not rely on remaining damp to work efficiently, but uses reflection. (although it is more effective when wet). That's great! Looks like a good product.

  • I have seen homemade terry cloth/towel type of cooling coats that can be easily wet down at lure coursing events.

  • actually there was a discussion on the Clean Run groups about cooling coats. I know CR sell several different types and CR is very good about testing what they sell.

mine wear coats a lot in the winter. My boyz wear coats inside as it is often chilly inside. Of course my boyz are almost 14 and 15; I don't worry as much about Z who will be 5 next month. The real problem here is the wind. It can be bitterly cold when that wind blows. So I make sure to get them a coat that blocks the wind. Regular fleece feels like nothing out here. I don't do boots, but sometimes I wonder if I should. the B's are pathetic rotating which foot is held up not touching the cold snowpacked ground. I also increase food on cold days. Having said all that, right now it is sunny and in the mid 60s and feels great! I even have a window open. Of course a few years ago when my parents visited, we had a blizzard for Thanksgiving.

Typically I have also advised those with dogs that 'appear' to have fanconi but are not basenjis or are mixes - to also have their vet fax the labs to Steve Gontos - he seems to have a handle on the chemistry of the disease in general that is helpful to those no B people

Wow, I'd not heard of these coat changes. My B has grown some longer hairs in the white around her neck and the red just on the edge of the white, and some of the hair along her neck has faded to a lighter color - no losing bunches or real drastic changes though. What other changes to their coats are normal?
