Bikin' Basenji

Basenji Talk
  • Ok, so there's a picture of a Basenji on a motorcycle in the spring issue of "Cottage Dog" magazine, and yes, it's a picture of my first Basenji, Giza. I happen to know the editor of the magazine, she wanted to do an article on motorcycle dogs and she remembered that we used to do a lot of biking with a dog, so an email showed up in my inbox… You can read the article on-line at: http://issuu.com/cottagedogmagazine/docs/cd_1204_cottagedog_issuu but you have to flip all the way to page 38.

I'm a bit embarrassed by the picture of my husband and I (I thought there would just be pictures of the dog) because
    A) it's not that current, and in fact I can't even walk anymore, and
    B) my husband's wearing runners which is such bad bikin' etiquette but it was a really hot day and we were camping just down the road at the show site; the picture was taken at the Canadian Basenji National Specialty BBQ.

And, as an aside, I bet Giza might have been the only competing dog to ever show up at a Basenji National Specialty on a Harley!

  • Gosh Joanne, those photos are so cool! Thanks for sharing.

  • haha how awesome! thats one proud basenji on the bike lol

  • Everyone looks badass, especially Giza. Thanks for sharing. =)

  • Great picture - I've got a very soft spot for motorcycling Basenjis!

  • Love it! I would not even dream of putting Dolce on the back of my bike. Firstly she hates when any wind blows in her face and freaks out when the windows are down in the car. Second, she is such a squirmer I fear she would wiggle herself right off the bike.

My Basenjis catch and kill wasps and have never got stung in doing so - their snap and release is too quick for them to get stung. However one did get stung on his foot when he trod on a dying bee. Often Basenjis get frightened of a particular thing when they sense their owner's fear. Are you afraid of wasps, Shelley?

Rocky yodels… like these dogs do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iTlEwTOzm0 Especially when we come home. Complete with the "lightswitch" tail flick and happy feet dance!

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!

BBOB-whew! So glad that you've done some homework with them. We've had too many abandoned B's lately that I can't bear it anymore. Like Andrea it depends on what they've gotten themselves into during the day like pretty flowers, grass or flowering trees…then I'm in trouble. :)
