A question about socializing a pup

Basenji Puppy Pen
  • :)For our basenji, we are enrolled in Kindergarden and I now refer to my treats as the "Bag of Persuasion"! The clicker has become our friend and what fun we are having! The cat is now the problem! She likes to be chased and little Kismet likes to catch and take down the cat! Not sure how we will train to not take down the cat without the cat helping! She is just too sweet and refuses to use claws or teeth on the puppy! Going to ask the trainers for help if there is any! Kindergarden for puppies is awesome and we highly reccommend it! Be prepared to be embarassed by your basenji! It makes it more fun since you never know what they will do next! Kismet is the class clown! She thinks she teaches the class! Happy adventures!

  • Socialization and puppy training are of utmost importance as puppyhood is the most important and critical time in your dog's development. What you do and do not do right now will affect your dog's behavior forever.

@elbrant On the flip side of this conversation can the breeders or owners recommend or suggest what they think Is a reasonable distance in walking an older basenji. My B turned 14 this past January. She always loved her walks - in her prime we’d do 4-5 miles a day. This past summer I noticed I had to walk her early in the morning or early evening due to the heat. This past fall we were doing about 2-3 miles per day and she was always eager to walk. Once winter hit, it was very sporadic and limited - depended on the weather. It was the first winter that she would refuse to go for a walk if there was snow out it was too cold. Once weather got better, we started walking again but have only been doing about 1 mile per day. There are many days she stops dead outside the door wanting to go back in if it’s too cold (I always dress her w/ a sweater or jacket if it’s cool). She enjoys her walks and doesn’t have any physical restrictions except for her age. Otherwise, I feel she is still spry, active, alert, and maintains a reasonable weight. I forget that she’s old except for the fact that she has a white face.

@basenji_life The vet can manipulate to see if something severe is wrong, but hips xrays need to wait til 6 mos (OFA) or (I think.. too tired to look) 4 mos.. oh heck I have to look.. "The PennHIP method can be reliably performed on a dog as young as 16 weeks old."

@Buddys: I agree, well said Robyn. A very well rounded reply, and I appreciate your time in explaining the options that are out there. I am not one who advocates adopting ONLY from a shelter or rescue. I love to hear that it happens, but totally respect the choice of wanting a pedigree. I just hope that anyone who breeds for what ever reason does follow responsible guidelines for the prospective new owners, health and welfare of the puppies, dams and sires, and of the wholesomeness(?) of the breed of choice. I do have a waiting list for the future puppies (besides the ones that myself and the co breeder are keeping.) I also have a contract that states for any reason the puppies are welcome back at any time for any reason and i highly urge this to my potential owners (i say required but we all know that people fall through loops when you say required) anyways All of my dogs are health tested and the sire is health tested too. Fanconi, eyes, thyroid, and the hips I am waiting for results but she isnt in heat yet so i hope i will get it before they are bred. Trust me, I also know how rescues are. I have rescued (www.foreverfriendsrescue.webs.com) since 2008 when i rescued my first dog scheduled to be put down that day i went into the pound, and i never really stopped) so i know the effects that bad breeders can have on the dog population. Which is why we need to have more responsible breeders out there. Ones who do the health testing, ones who care where there puppies go, ones who want to help the breed, ones who give a $h!t. I love this breed. They are my world and i just cant live without them. They chose me. I chose them. Its the only breed that is right for ME. and I know this. I love showing (only been to a few so far, as i am fairly new) but i love it and i enjoy meeting new people that share the love of basenjis too and I enjoy the fun and sport of it. I really want to do what is right with breeding, which is why i have waited to find a good breeder to help me along and to help guide me as my mentor. Miah is a wonderful dog, so close to standard. and so pretty. nice pedigree and the most supurb temperament also. With my mating (dorsey x miah) I expect great things! Me and my co owner are really excited as is the sire owner. We cant wait for this litter. I know breeding is a huge controversy because of all the unwanted pets in the world, but i have been there with rescueing and if i truely didnt feel like my dog was worthy of it, and i truely didnt feel like I could do it CORRECTLY, i honestly wouldnt. but thank you for your input. I know you care, as do we. but i really am trying to do it right. Spent lots of money getting tests done, and finding a really nice bitch to start with, and getting the knowledge. (I got my first basenji 11 years ago! and i have researched and experienced the whole time!) After 11 years, i feel i am finally ready to take the step and breed my bitch to start my kennel where i want to continue to show and create loving, family pets. as well as fun things like coursing and agility, etc..

Wow! Unusual in a Basenji…....they are usually really happy to earn food. My BC wouldn't even look at food if there was anything else of interest around. Fortunately, like most Border Collies, he would work his heart out for my approval. It is possible to get around this problem. I would suggest learning a little bit about clicker training, then work with him at home, free of distractions. Make sure your rewards are particularly yummy. (Food is the best answer here, simply because it is quick. Playing with toys, etc, takes too much time and interrupts the flow of training) Many dogs get into the "game" of figuring out what will earn them a reward. Eventually the click itself becomes positive reinforcement, a la "I got it!". Hopefully he will get into the spirit of it, and then you can begin challenging him a bit more. I would suggest putting "watch me" on cue. Practice a lot. Then try to make it a behavior you require when he sees another dog, to the point where seeing another dog becomes the cue.

Hi there. I was about to post this question and did a search for this topic. It's been a while now! I am curious how running with a Basenji turned out? We are considering a Basenji and my husband wants it to be a running partner.
