Not sure if I should worry about this.

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • My basenji Ellie is 12 and has recently started eating my shoes and pants. Her brother has deibetes and is on a special food. I am wondering if she is okay to eat it or not, the vet said it was okay. She has also been trying to eat some of my plants outside which I have never seen her do before at all. Is she not getting the nutrition she needs, because they eat the same thing. Her poops seem to be very small as well, maybe I am over-worring, she is a small dog, but is now gaining weight.

    Any advise?

    Thanks,
    Nancy

  • What are you feeding her?

  • At Ellie's age, I would take her to the vet for a check-up. When a behavior changes out of the blue, there is always a chance that it is being caused by a medical problem.

@tlish: so, do i have this process correct for fanconi testing? 1. register dog with phenome project (almost wrote 'phoneme' - you can tell i'm a teacher) 2. fill out an order for testing kit on OFA site question - does the dog need to be already registered with AKC before you begin this process, or is that irrelevant? thanks! You do not have to register the dog with the Phenome Project. offa.org is doing the testing management so you can go straight there and look under DNA tests.

Both of my Basenjis had occurances of Vestibular Syndrome at about 13 years of age. Alex actually had a 2nd occurance about 8 months after the first. Rapid eye movement and the inability to walk were the first symptoms noticed. Cassi made a complete recovery after about a week. Alex completely recovered after the first episode, but has had some lingering effects after the second.

Keep her in the cool temps for the day & make sure she has lots of water & you could even give her some ice cubes. I would even put some water in her kibble. If you think she's still warm rub some ice cubes on the pads of her feet to cool her off.
