  • Haha, Yeah. It is too hard to be mad at the little guy. I'm home for a break in between my classes, and I'm having a hard time having to leave him in the crate and go back :(

And, Deschroedter, I've read on here a few times about how the lovable, sleepy puppy phase is just a trap to make you fall in love before they show you the real basenji in them! That's so funny.

I also love the neck cuddle and sleeping with his toy pic. <3

And, LindaH, I know exactly what you mean! When he falls asleep on my lap and I need to move, I just scoop my hands flat under him and carry him to his crate- not a stir! :D

  • Dexter the Delicious is cute… be careful what you name him, as he may become that... i.e. Dexter the Devilicious! lol

    There's always Buster Point-Dexter?

    Saint Dexter Louisiana? :)

  • Lol, Hmmm he may become what I name him? In that case his call name has already condemned him- my fiance told me that the reason he suggested Dexter to me is because he got it off of the TV show "Dexter"…about the serial killer  Great, huh? haha

I like Buster Point-Dexter :) I'll have to think about this one for a little while...

I am not in your area, but ... you should know that dog training is about teaching you how to interact with your dog, as opposed to teaching your dog how to do things. Most area Kennel Clubs offer training where you are your dogs partner in the class. The things you will learn will last your lifetime. I applaud the non-punitive approach. A lot of people fly off the handle when their dog chews on the wrong thing, or doesn't quite have potty training down. One of the best things you can do is give them love when they do it right and don't react when they don't. Recognize that he's just a pup. You can trade an acceptable chew toy for your shoes, and you can avoid the problem by closing the closet door so your pup can't get to your shoes. Accidents will happen and learning to potty doesn't happen overnight. Just provide a lot of verbal love when the pup gets it right and don't react when he doesn't. Love and praise are the best tools in your training bag. Congrats on your pup. Can't wait to hear about all of your adventures!

@elbrant Yes, she's good an patient sometimes, I've been taking pics of her from day 1 so she's used to it, I'm allowed a couple of mins and no more though.

Thanks everyone! We couldn't be happier, he is everything we could have asked for! Still training for the therapy route, but we certainly won't force it on him if he isn't enjoying it. He wants a sister…I mean WE want him to have a sister :)... but we're probably going to hold off another couple years before doing so! Especially since we may possibly be moving in the next year or so.
