  • Our 9 month old basenji boy will pee and poop on our master bed. He is walked and he is let out in our fenced in yard every two to three hours or even more frequently. Why is he doing this? Our 15 month old basenji girl is 100 percent housebroken .. They are very bonded. What can we do to stop this? We are frustrated!!! We have started the house breaking training from the beginning over and over again and he will still do this.

  • Simple solution is don't allow him access to the bed unless you are there to supervise.

  • Thanks Debra But the problem is that I was lying on the bed and he did it right next to me..It is so fustrating!!!!

  • My beloved Curie, aka the best dog in the entire world, did that until she was about 2. Some of her relatives supposedly did, too :)

Debra's solution is the thing that worked. If he does it when you're there, don't even give him access when you're there. It's hard, because they're really great cuddlers, but I'd cut him out of the bed for at least six months and then evaluate again.

Also, are you sure he's actually doing his business outside in the fenced yard? A variation on the "plan" would be to only give him access when you have verified with your own eyes that he has peed AND pooped out there. Only on the bed when empty, in other words. We can get fooled into thinking they've done something just because they went out there, but sometimes they just goof off.

  • Don't allow him on the bed unless you are actually watching him, not just if you're there, because the moment you turn your back, it will happen. If you see him start to circle and sniff, get him right off the bed and outside immediately.

  • @Lesco:

Thanks Debra But the problem is that I was lying on the bed and he did it right next to me..It is so fustrating!!!!

It's wicked frustrating, believe me, I know. And expensive to have the comforters professionally cleaned. Grrr. :)

  • Wheat did this for a bit.
I was not watching her when I put her outside, so now, before bed, we walk in the front yard with a leash, and she isn't allowed back into the house until she is empty.
Since we have been doing this, we have had NO accidents.
BUT I also cleaned up with an enzime cleaner…

  • Asd the others have advised, the cure for this is Ban the Bed!

Once the habit is there it's very hard tio break because the smell still lingers unless it is neutralised. Just washing isn't enough.

  • Wheat is allowed on the bed. Sleeps with us.
The cleaners you get at the pet store do break down the urine so they
    don't remark.
What you have to do is keep the bedroom off limits, babygates, until you have taken
your b out and walked it until empty.
    Then enjoy snuggling.
Now, if they want to get up in the night, be sure to get up and take them out…or else!

  • +1

Enzyme cleaners are excellent. And you must witness your b peeing and pooping at night.

I also set the alarm for 3:30 a.m. because Kipawa can't hold his pee 11:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. I leash him and take him into the yard, and he knows that peeing at that time is done right away. I can almost do this with my eyes closed now. In fact, I don't think I really wake up to do it

  • Fran, my older b and I are also those who can't sleep throught the night.
So, we all get up and take care of business.
At least your pup will out grow this…
Any chance we will see you at the EBC specality in Aug in Auburn Wa again?
    I would love it!

What worked for me was taking my Basenji for a short walk along the road that I live on every hour until she went. After just a couple of days it made a big difference and after that I increased it to 2 hourly, 3 hourly and so on. I think it worked because she became used to going outside and it felt less familiar going inside. Going outside and waiting for her to perform with her getting stressed, wanting to go back inside and not understanding what I was asking didn't get us anywhere and this was much quicker and long lasting. Now she goes for 2 decent walks per day (morning and night) and usually asks to go into the garden once in between (she is 18 months old). My Basenji was a puppy so if you decide to try this you may not want to start at hourly. The other benefit of this is that she doesn't tend to want to poo in the garden unless she has an upset stomach.

Cara is 11. She has only love our Samoyed in her entire adult life. No animal is worthy of breathing air. While Pam did take her about 5 years ago for a refresher course, she learned to ignore the other basenjis, not like them. If she freezes, she is definitely waiting for prey. Usually she keeps walking slowly, eyes seemingly forward, until she is within striking distance. I wouldn't trust my dog to lie in wait until you truly are sure of their intentions. Even then, do you know if their behavior may be stressing out the other dog? And how many dogs and how much time do you have to play out this behavior? On a good day, Moose the Samoyed runs into up to 10 of his harem on a long walk (usually 3 to 5). He's out to play, that's the goal. On a potty walk when my daughter or her fiance are in a hurry, they give him very little play time and he accepts it. No, he's not a basenji...but also an ancient independent thinking breed. They live to play. We get to decide when. My point being, I understand that a behavior may be normal...but I am surprised at owners throwing up their hands and letting it go. There are many situations where you need the dog to keep moving, and you want training in force before that occurs. I am not sure at the resistance against that view.

@basenji_life said in Help please!: Oh and yesterday evening she started peeing on the sofa while looking straight at him... and she normally goes outside to pee... maybe she was upset that he was home? Did you solve this issue? I had a dog who didnt like kids. Someone told me it could be because the previous owner had kids who scared the dog. So it could be a traumatic experience for the dog. And when kids were around, the dog would bark a lot always.

I agree, growling should neither be rewarded or punished, it is telling you that she is not happy and distressed, especially as she is not a regular growler. It gives you the chance to de-escalate the situation and be sure everyone is safe and comfortable. A good trainer will teach you, they won't have to necessarily see it.

So I went out and purchased two other posts for my ground lighting timer last night. So now the lights automatically come on in the morning also. I got the kids up today and put Zaire on a leash and took her out back with with me to her spot. She went right away. I let her off the leash once she was done and she stayed right with me untill I went back into the house. I then gave her breakfast and opened the back door and went outside. When she was done eating she came out to the door and saw that I was out in the yard. She cam out and did her after breakfast buisness. I am thinking that she really just wants to have a little light out in the yard to see what she is doing. I am going to try tomorrow to just take her out without a leash, but with the lights on and see if she seems more comfortable. I just want to thank you all again for your knowledge and willingness to share experiences….it is such a benefit to everyone that we have this community. :)
