Puppy training classes…questions

Basenji Training
  • @Janneke:

I really like those with the beads.. have looked at them before.. but first need a puppy ;)

:D that could happen soon, maybe…..... and yes, I like the beads also.. my only comment to people is make sure you know who you are buying from and their quality.... it really does make a difference.

And Sal knows Basenjis since she is a breeder... so she know how to make them hold up to a Basenji

She will probably ship them to Europe.. right? I don't know anyone else who makes these!

And yes… I'm saving money until next week.. If there are girls.. I'm going to spend it all :D :D

Yes she will and sometimes she either goes to Crufts or one of the other big shows over there, don't know what her plans are for this year.

Shipping would be ok. Do you know anything about the prices?

  • @tanza:

And you can also use braided leather (I use both, braided plain, braided with beads, and the thin leather from Rick) for show… here is a link to Sal Wuornos, Sonbar Basenjis who makes them.

    http://sonbar.homestead.com/Leads-with-beads.html

Sal made the 36" lead I referred to. It's beaded and I love it, I can post a picture if interested. I think half the basenji people around here have one of her leads . We're having them as prizes for the July BCOSW specialty. She'll make them by the inch so you can get whatever size you want. You have to either supply the chain you want to use or she'll charge you for one she provides. It should be pretty inexpensive to ship, it would just go in a small padded envelope.

  • Pat, do you know if she is planning to 'do' Crufts so I can look out for her. I'd love to get some of the beaded leads but have never seen them over here. The 'flashy' ones sold over here are not usually very good quality.

  • Very nice…I have actually already looked at hers, but didn't know what to go with..so many choices...You guys are the best, thank you so much for all your help, info and support..:)

Here is my ".02"…. they really are not that expensive... especially if you just get one without the beads.... I would be one of each, work with them and see that "feels" the best when you are working with them... not like you can't change back and forth.....

  • @Patty:

I don't, but you can email her and find out.. I have not heard her say that she was doing Crufts this year.

I can attest that her's are of the best quality… if that helps

  • Thanks, Pat, I will email and order if she'll ship over here.

  • Pat these leads by Sal are beautiful…

So if anyone does hear that she is going to Crufts, I would be VERY interested in knowing, please... I dont have her email address, and as it sounds like a few people might be contacting her about Crufts, I'd rather not hassle her too :)...

  • You can email her…. she doesn't mind. Her website has her email addy.

  • Sal has sent me some details but she won't be at Crufts. She is going to check with Sally if any body is coming over. I haven't yet emailed her back but perhaps if somebody is coming here you could order as well.

  • After the recommendations for Sally's braided beaded leads I have now placed an order with her for a black lead with brindle beads on it as a homage to my dear Otis…can't wait to get it..will take pictures once I do. Thanks for your help guys.

  • Just wondering if some of you who show red/white B's could take a pic of your Sal leads, and if its not too much to ask, even a pic of them on the dog, please ??? :D…

I find the biggest problem is trying to buy a lead that will blend into the red coat. I dont like dark leads on the reds, I want the lead to be 'invisible' and Im having a HUGE problem finding what I want. Currently showing them all on a white paracord lead, with a bit of bling, but they are ruined so quickly by your dirty food encrusted hands, they now all look grey :(...

  • Ok just going to finish catching up on all the Basenji threads, then Im off to email Sal :)…

For those that show red/whites, with Sal's leads, what colour do you use to show the dogs in, out of Sal's leather choices ???

  • Saba, I got it in black to stand out against Pippin's colors and also to make the brindle gold/black beads stand out more..as I am wanting them on there for Otis..(silly maybe)..but she had a almost like congac color that seems like it would be nice, I'd think. I know a few people has her leads, they should be able to help out better than me.

  • Finally received Pippin's show lead from Sal Wuornos…..I must say I love it...she does an amazing job. The lead is 36" braided black leather, I chose two brindle beads, for Otis...and one silver paw print bead. The chain is braided onto the lead which makes it much slimmer, no bulky clip. Thanks Tanza and Nemo for letting me know about her leads.

  • Very nice. I'm sure you'll be happy with it for a long time. I have another kangaroo lead and it stretched out a couple of inches after use for a short while. The one I have from Sal hasn't changed at all so far. It's currently on a hiatus until I get my next pup. Although, I'll probably get that pup its own lead too, lol.

  • Sal has made one up for me and is sending it to Crufts with Katie Boyd - I'm really excited to be getting it and I too would like to thank Pat and Nemo for their recommendation.

    Saba, have you ordered one?

@drew82 I've been doing rescue and breeding (not Basenjis, and not for 20 yrs now)... and I have to say that among responsible trainers, rescues, breeders and professional veterinary behaviorists, you won't find any who will say under 8 weeks is okay for any breed... and for many, 10 to 12 weeks is recommended. It is in fact illegal to take puppies under 8 weeks from some states and it should be in all of them. Call a few dozen rescues and ask them how many animals they deal with that have issues started from being placed too young. It is good you are working on things, just hopefully the physical responses won't continue. No breed needs to be swatted or even mildly hurt for training. Basenjis even less so than many. It hurts your relationship with the puppy, and you are punishing a baby for being a baby... there is no "rebellious thing"... just normal behavior you have to patiently train away from.

@pacificNWbasenji: Thanks for all of the great suggestions. Quercus: I will try opportunistic clicking/rewarding when he is nesting, hopefully it will help reinforce the desired behavior rather than confuse him. Agilebasenji: Surprisingly enough my guys do not roll on damp towels, very unbasenji like of them. They do insist on grabbing towels, running off with them and promptly killing them by giving them a great shake before stealing the stoled goods from each other. They ignore them during our training sessions because I have taught them 'on your bed' where they will run and place themselves on the area I point at (dog bed, place on couch, towel or blanket laid out) Thanks for the advice. Clay: Matter of fact we just began targeting on Saturday as well, with the nose touch. Dude does have a great high five so I think that paw touch won't be difficult. Tonight I began directing him onto the towel and doing a low five and click/rewarding when he would give the five and his paw would land on the towel. Lvoss: That's what i'll try next as soon as I can get him to exhibit a bit of the behavior. Thanks! Cool. Let us know how it works out.

THANK YOU!! I finally feel there is somebody out there that 'gets it'. Our girl does not respond to any of the 'pack leader' stuff - I'm sure she was dumped because she is just such a stinker. Everytime I hit bottom somebody helps me through the disaster with encouragment (that's why I joined this group.) THANK YOU for your good thougths - things do progress - her private trainer is coming this weekend & we're doing the prong collar. Last night she sat in her crate for almost 45 minutes. No matter what, she's here to stay & she is so darn cute!!!!! That tail is really precious - thank you so much for all your e-support!! Joanne & Sophie:) :) :) :)

Glad to hear she did well. She must have heard what you said and wanted to prove you wrong. They are such stinkers!

@Mantis: when Cairo cries in his kennel ( in there with Caesar) it means he has to go to the bathroom….i have found that immediate potty once out of the kennel is a great way to help with the potty training.... yes I take her out after sleeping in the crate and when ever she has a nap it helps ~Kat
