• Call and/or email the shelter and ask the adoption fee, how long the B has been there, if it is foster care, and, if not, how long do they keep dogs until they are put down. That's a start.

    http://www.basenjirescue.org/asp/ScreenersByState.asp

Email the person in the Kansas area. I'm sure a BRAT person on the forum will make contacts, too. Tell the BRAT coordinator the information you know and the link to the dog. Good luck.

One thing I've learned about rescue is be persistent and don't be afraid to ask any question that pops into your head. Sometimes shelters have rigid rules, but asking them to bend those rules often works. You will get one of two answers - yes or no.

FYI: many shelters have purebreed rescue listings and contact them, if they have time. The shelter I'm dealing with allows a dog to be adopted, and, if it isn't adopted, then a rescue group can pull it. The risk is that many kill shelters do not screen applicants and the dog could end up with a person(s) who doesn't understand Basenjis, so the cycle repeats itself.

  • You can ask the shelter if they are willing to "work with" rescue groups. Some shelters will reduce or waive the adoption fee if a rescue group comes quickly to get the dog.

I hope BRAT can get this fella out and get him a nice home!

  • I emailed the shelter today at 3:30(november 4). I will post the response.

    Great!

I e-mailed them at 2:04 today as well, but since you are actually in Kansas, i think your e-mail is much better.

  • Please, when a b is in a kill shelter, do contact BRAT as quickly as you can. They might know about the dog, or maybe not, but most of us BRAT folks, work, have families, and sometimes we do go a day or so without checking the e-mails.
    So, that is my advice.

  • I wish he was closer he is so cute. Hope he get's help soon.

Thanks. I e-mailed Betty Garcia, the Kansas screener in the link from Vicki at 2:19 today, right after I e-mailed the shelter. And, I filled out the application to be a volunteer for BRAT while I was at it! 😃

I hope someone gets this guy out of there.

  • Houston

He is very pretty..I too, hope somebody gets him out fast..

  • I understand Kansas has had a lot of b's show up. Foster homes are always needed.
Thank you for signing up as screener. More hands are so very helpful.

  • Here is the reply from the Hutch Shelter…

    Diann,

We do work with rescue groups and if this Basenji organization would be interested in having us transfer him to them, we would certainly be interested in visiting with them about him. We do not charge a "pull fee" per se, but if they have an out of state license we do have to get a spay/neuter deposit from them in the amount of $50 that's refunded once we receive proof of the surgery.

If they would be interested in helping, please have them contact me ASAP as we were planning on sending him to Denver Dumb Friends League this Sunday if we cannot make other arrangements for him.

    Thanks so much!!

  • Got a response from the shelter
    here it is:

    "Hello,

Yodel?s been here since 10/30 and we do not keep dogs for any certain length of time. As long as they are healthy, adoptable and we have space we?ll give them as long as we can?so the time they can stay here really is variable? His adoption fee is $100 and you can find more adoption information at our website, listed below. We adopt to anyone in the U.S., as long as they are willing to come pick up him/her and we work with breed rescues as much as we can?

I was contacted today by a volunteer (I think?) from BRAT, named Diann Strader and I gave her some information, telling her to pass on the information to the applicable people from BRAT if they were interested in helping him.

We do have plans to transfer him to Denver Dumb Friends League this Sunday if no other arrangements are made for him before then, FYI.

Thanks for your interest and let me know if we can help you further!!"

I looked up the Denver Dumb Friends League. It is also a kill shelter, although only a 0.2% kill rate for healthy dogs, and 8.42% kill rate for treatable dogs, and a 73% live release rate overall.

If he does go to them, is there someone who educates them on strip testing these older guys?

  • I contacted the BRAT web site and got a "basic response" and was told I would/could be contacted in 48 hours… I did have a Brat volunteer email, but it seems to have disappeared from my address book. I did email our BRAt foster mom as they are friends and am waiting to hear back from her. she usually doesnt respond until late at nite.... So if anyone knows a Kansas BRAT volunteer, you might contact them asap. I am still working on it. I am not able to drive to Hutch(i work full time, but I have a few friends that might be able to help out, as i used to live in hutch). thanks!

  • Good luck with this boy.
If I lived closer I would pull him and pay the fee just the get him out of there.

The only thing I know about Kansas is Dorothy lived there before she went to Oz to meet the Wizard. :p

  • Lol. we get that a lot.
    never met her, tho. 😉

  • Dorothy would be an old granny by now.

He is a gorgeous B-boy…I noticed they have a $50 neuter charge for rescue groups, but do they charge that if he's already neutered?

Y'all will work your magic with this guy...he has a bright future with all of you behind him.

  • I cannot sleep right now because I have 2 B's on my mind. I am worried about what is going to happen to this little guy, and I keep thinking about another B, Aries, a 13 year old, "former show dog" listed on another rescue site. At least the 13 year old is in foster, and at a no kill, so she is fine, but to be in rescue at 13, poor baby.

And Yodel. I can't take him. We have our 2 dogs, and a dopey lab mix foster in our house, along with our 3 cats, and 2 foster cats. We can't handle any more biomass in this house. These are the excuses I am making. Also, if we adopted one of these 2 B's, my puppy plans for a year from now would go down the drain. This is making me feel really guilty.

This Puppy would be our first purebred, and our first animal we planned on. Our others were all either found, dropped at the vet clinic where I worked or failed fosters. I feel like they chose us, and I love them for it, but I also feel like we deserve to choose this time. But I feel guilty for it. Am I killing a rescue by deciding I want a well-bred puppy?

Thanks for listening to my rant. I hope BRAT responds soon so I can absolve myself of some of the worry about Yodel, and some of the guilt by at least volunteering.

  • I'm not sure if this helps, but you do have the right to plan your fur family. I sounds to me like you've put in a lot of time helping, so the planned pup will be your reward. You know what works in your household.

    Nicole,

You have done and are doing more than most can or are willing to do with rescue. And you shouldn't feel guilty about wanting a well-bred puppy.

Edit: Ok, my grammar sucks, but you get the point. 🙂

  • Houston

    Nicole,

Bless your heart, you have done so much for rescues, even if you hadn't you deserve to be able to choose a pup, now that you are very involved, I believe that you even more so deserve to choose your furbaby.
I understand the guilt, I get that every time I look too, but it is not possible for one person to do all that needs to be done. You are doing your share and then some, bless you for that.

  • Nicole - As individuals, we can only do so much. Don't feel guilty.

I hope someone steps up to the plate and helps this boy in Kansas.
I, too, am worried about him.
