• BCOA is looking for pictures of "Basenjis Gone Bad" for a new calendar. You can find the details at the link below if you want to submit a picture.

Right now, I guess I'm lucky that I don't have any pictures to submit. I might send this one, it's the closest thing that I've caught on film that would come close to the theme…. Come on people, I know you got em!

  • I wish I had seen this last night when Arrow decided to investigate a feather pillow  I have never seen so many feathers 🙂

I look forward to seeing naughty pics, I am sure there must be some out there!

  • Do the photos need to be from BCOA members?

Unless I missed it, I don't believe you have to be a BCOA member.

  • Why would they want to put out a calendar that shows Basenjis destroying something? That would tend to support that word "destructive" in their description. Look what they can do so don't get one. All dogs can be destructive but it's not part of their general description. Am I wrong here? We Basenji owners can laugh at it but the calendar goes out to be sold and seen by non Basenji people and that image stays in their head. " Oh ya, I've seen a picture of Basenji in a calender standing next to an expensive leather chair it destroyed". Maybe I'm over reacting here and people will look at it and realize it's just being dog.

Oh come on…it is meant to be funny and I can't wait to see the pictures myself. I wish I had a picture of Ruby's mouth full of cashmere when she destroyed my $275 sweater.:D:rolleyes: I'm sure that pales in comparison to some.

Quite frankly if seeing some destruction makes someone stop to think a little more carefully about getting a basenji and makes them do more research, I'm all for it. I always list off the bad traits before the good when people ask me about the breed - doesn't mean they aren't a wonderful dog, but they truly aren't for everyone, and I'm ok with that.

The calendar is for sale on the BCOA website - don't know of any other place it will be sold (maybe member breeders will sell it). If people checking out the calendar have done any homework (read the website or made contact with breeders from there), the prospective calendar buyer should have a good idea that they "can be destructive."

If I had to guess the percentage of people that either don't own a basenji or don't know about the breed that would be interested in the calendar, I would guess it would be small. Around here, any basenji calendar I've seen in stores is still available when they mark them down to $2 in March - they are not a popular breed. When the Bay State Basenji Club put out the calendar with Mike Work's photos from the last Congo trip, those were still available mid year the year it came out - and we're talking stunning photography (I kept that one even though it is 3 years old now). We're talking a limited distribution - to a captive somewhat pre-qualified audience.

And I don't think a person on this list would say a bored basenji "wouldn't" be destructive.

Homework?? Most people don't. That's why animals get dumped.

Well then, case in point why the destruction calendar is a good idea - they see pictures of a destructive basenji and get scared off. I'm ok with that.

Yeah, that could be a good point.

    +1
For that purpose, this is much better than a calendar full of cute little basenji puppies. I'd rather scare off a few. And I doubt many people outside of the "basenji family" will see this calendar.
