Fanconi Testing

  • How does one go about testing a basenji for fanconi? Do vets do this or is this something I do myself by mail. Any information or web links would be appreciated.

  • No, your vet doesn't do it. It is a cheek swab kit that you will need to do. It comes with an instruction sheet about what to do.

First you register your dog with the Canine Phenome Project:
    http://www.caninephenome.org/

You will order the DNA kit from within the registration - there is a link to click on the upper right hand side of the page (New FTA based Fanconi test) and it will bring up a page from the OFA (offa.org) where you will place your order. The kit is $65. Be sure to print a copy of the confirmation as that has a login code that you can check for the receipt of the swab by the OFA and the results (before they are mailed).

I recently ordered a kit for my new puppy boy and it arrived 3 days after I ordered it. The results come fast these days - I know someone that found out their results 3 days after the swab was received back at the OFA.

  • You can order a test from the OFA website, https://secure.offa.org/cart.html

Also, please take the time to register your dog with the Canine Phenome Project, http://www.caninephenome.org, and fill out the surveys. It is free and helps give the health committee a view of what is going on with the breed.

  • Great! Thanks for the information. This would be for a rescue dog which I will not know any background information on. I assume that does not matter in the surveys?

  • The important thing with the surveys is that you fill out as much as you know. It is okay if you don't know everything, just leave those things blank.

  • We hope the results are good, and we will cheer if they are, and if they aren't, we will support you.
Do let us know what you have found please.

The more data that is in the data base, the better people can use the that information as this is a Linkage test only… and errors can be made either human or test....

@tanza: I did send you an email, but it is good to repeat here, I think. The protocol for treatment of Fanconi, information about Fanconi, information about strip testing can be found both at www.basenji.org and www.basenjihealth.org Thank you so much for the info to pass on.

@Terry: I heard a rumor, wondered if anyone knows if it's true. The rumor was that an affected dog has been identified with 2 clear parents. Pat, I know you're usually up on this… Terry That seems to be the case, Lisa will most likely also chime in. They are now retest that dog along with his parents. As we all know there is always human error and the samples may have been mismarked. I have no doubt in the test (and I know that others will mostly likely use this as a way to discount the test), but I will stand on the over 1100 samples that have already been done and they all seem to be as they should. IMO and I have a sample that was most likely taken at the same time, that there was either a problem when the sample was sent in or there was a problem when the DNA was extracted. At the same time and the sample taken at the same time, there is another dog that is showing as Carrier from two clears… again that is being retested also...

@dmcarty: re: puppy mills and testing only one parent - I know for a FACT that at one place the sire of several years of litters was not the sire - it was a male who had good papers so his name was listed even though he was DEAD. One of the PM's males was the sire of several litters attributed to this OTHER dog. (I happen to know the person who owned the substitute sire) So it is unfortunate but the testing will only be as ethical as those who provide information to the test. Geez I hate to even say that but I am afraid that it's true. No doubt about that… and another reason to only look at AKC who has a DNA parentage program for high volume breeders...
