Crating

  • Is it ok to have one basenji crated while the other is left free when I am out of the house?

You know what's going to happen right? Sonny Boy lets the new girl out after you leave, they have a blast all day, then back in right before you get home.:D

  • yes. I've got one loose, one in an xpen, one in a crate and one malinois in a crate when I leave. Nobody seems to feel they are treated "unfairly". I've found as long as everyone gets a cookie (or 2 or 3) everyone is happy.

LOL :D I hope that happens!! I keep getting so nervous how sonny is going to react to this..

  • I have never crated one or both. When I leave flat I always left them free and I have never had problem with that. They are always calm and can play together :).

Should I keep her crate in the same room Sonny spends his time (he can roam anywhere but rarely leaves his spot in the kitchen window)….. or should she have her own space away from Sonny?

  • You joke about one basenji letting the other out - Liyah opens both Ruby's and Brando's crates to let them out. The first time Liyah did that trick was when she was 13wks. Last night, Ruby had left a toy in her locked crate, and Liyah let herself into Ruby's crate to get the toy - she's a pistol that one!

Regarding whether to crate in the same room - I crate my 3 in the same room. I always think they like the company - although Brando will get them all going in a howling chorus.

  • mine are all in the same room - it's the den and has a large sliding glass door so everyone can see out. Digital, the brindlewonderkid, is left to go where ever he likes. Usually he's in the den or bedroom.

As some of you may recall, I had HORRIBLE problems getting Keoki to crate – took me until he was 9 mos old {and three crates!!} before he would sleep at night at all w/out screaming and shredding his bedding. For him, the issue was NOT crating, but separation. I could put him in the crate and while wasn't crazy about it, he would lie down and go to sleep as long as I was in the room w/him. As soon as I moved to leave, he would go absolutely insane. X-pen didn't work either as he tore his nose up while moving the pen across the floor. I finally bought a large crate {-a great dane could be comfy in our current crate} and we crate Keoki and Jazz together. Jazz would prefer to be alone, but she has always been a dog that rolls with the punches, so she does fine. Keoki now runs to his crate if I just say, "Go to bed". They go to bed at 10 PM and although I open the crate door at 5:30 AM, the seldom come out before 9 AM. I can crate them when guests are over if necessary {Jazz gets uncomfortable if too many people are over}, when we go out, and all night w/no complaints. {I am home all day, most days}. My family says he still whines at the window for a few minutes any time I leave the house, which is funny to me because he doesn't seem to be particularly attached to me when we're all home together although both dogs seem to know that I am THE MAMA and they behave best and listen most to me. I wonder how often the dog's anxious behavior in crates is like Keoki - not a crating problem, but a separation anxiety issue.

Many puppies will totally forget about house training when they really start to teeth…. so just always go back to housetraining 101

hard to say if crating was a big negative in her puppy place for her that could account for her behavior now? Have you called her breeder to ask her/him? They sometimes can give you wonderful ideas that can help faster than the rest of us because they know their puppy.

Because she spent so much of her young life in a crate.. it will be a struggle, IMO, for her to get the idea that it is not an acceptable place for pee/poop… time, I think will reverse the behavior, but I would also say that she will "never" be trustworthy in a crate.....
