Searching to adopt a female basenji

  • hey guys, i am trying to adopt a female basenji to add to my family. I currently have a 2.5 year old male basenji and i want to introduce him to a beautiful playmate so he can play with. I of course play with him but cant always be out doors 24/7. so i thought why not get him a friend. The reason im looking for a female as well is because i would like to have puppies as well. i think he would be a great father and would really like to give him that opportunity. and of course i think it is cruel to spay or neuter your dog. unless of course they are a stray. but when you have a family and home for them then they should be left like god made them. my dog is AKC registered and healthy and just plain beautiful. Ill try to upload some pictures of him soon. if you have any info that would really be appreciated. =] :)

  • When you say healthy, have you done all the the tests required to get a CHIC certification on your boy? Has both of his parents been tested with results available on the OFA website? Have you shown your boy in conformation or done any lure coursing with him?

There are many things that should be considered before breeding a litter. What qualities do the parents offer the breed? Have they been tested for at minimum the 4 health tests required to get a CHIC certification, Fanconi, Thyroid, Hips and Eyes? Are you willing to be responsible for every puppy for the entirety of its life no questions asked if the home doesn't work out? What is your goal for the litter? What do you hope to accomplish? Are you prepared in case there is complications during pregnancy or birth? An emergency vet visit can easily run over $1000 and there is the risk of losing puppies and/or dam. Have you gotten involved in the basenji community? Are you aware of basenji rescue and why basenjis end up in rescue so your puppies are not at risk of needing rescue?

These are just some of the questions that should be considered before breeding.

  • Before even thinking of breeding a litter, have you done health testing on your boy? Just because they are AKC registered, that doesn't mean that they should or need to be bred. Have you discussed this with your boy's breeder? Has he been DNA tested for Fanconi? Hips/Elbows been OFA'ed? What does he have to offer the breed? And in looking for a bitch to bred, there is so much to consider, especially temperament. What do you know about your boy's background, Sire/Dam, grandparents? and their health and temperament. When you look or get a bitch, you need to also do all the required health testing on her too.. and need to know as much as you can about her health background and temperament.

  • Hi jagm -

Are you really sure you want puppies? Have you ever bred a litter before? It is truly more work than I would have ever thought, especially if you are doing all of the right things, as listed above by tanza & lvoss. Are you prepared to keep 6 or so puppies forever? I used to think to neuter & spay was cruel as well, but realistically, that's only a selfish notion.
Good luck in finding your boy a companion! I found one for my girl & that's the best thing I could have done for her, other than having her spayed.

Again, hope that you have contacted BRAT to take them for placement….. It would be great if you have had them tested for Fanconi with the DNA test.. that would help in getting them placed faster...

I had to re-home my darling red/white Basenji named Isis, a 1.5 year old spayed girl, in July of 2012. My living circumstances were economically altered and I could no longer give her the care she needed and deserved. I kept in touch with the gentleman who adopted her but recently found out that he re-homed again without letting me know. He can't or won't provide me with any information regarding the adoption. Astounding to me, as now I am quite distraught. I have all of the vet records for her and wanted to get in touch with the new family to provide information and support. I am not interested (or rather can't anyway) reclaim her, so I don't want said family to worry about that type of situation. I just want to keep in touch but not interfere. I only want to keep in touch and would be most grateful for any response that may be out there for her. I appreciate you taking time to read this and hope that you can lend a hand. I would be in your debt.

Awww. Such a cute little girl. I think that we would be a good foster for a dog like her, or one of the FL dogs. We have experience working with pathologically shy dogs. We have an already established relationship with a great local trainer, and with a veterinary behaviorist. We have 3 dogs here to help with the socialization. But we have 3 dogs, and a fourth coming within the year. I'm afraid my heart is bigger than what we can really handle. I'm also afraid because there is no guarantee she will be adopted. If I knew it was short-term, and she could go to another place after a few months of work, I would be much more inclined to jump at the chance to foster. But, with the cats we foster, one has been here a year (tomorrow will be a year actually), and another we finally gave in and adopted after 2 years of swearing we wouldn't. The "normal" cats get adopted quickly (we have had about 10 go through our house, with the longest staying 6 mos.), but the behavior cases that need socialization and desensitization/counter conditioning work tend to stay. We have only had 2 foster dogs, and they were great and found great homes, but we are running out of friends to convince to adopt dogs. :) -Nicole

Hard to say whether the breeder will take her back. I'll ask. The owner isn't willing to "give" Tiara to anyone, she wants the adoption fee. Tiara belongs in a home without other dogs or children, lots of one-on-one training, long walks for exercise, high quality/low-fat/low-carb food, and a stress free environment. It is disturbing that a six-year-old Basenji is looking at yet another home. I should stop looking at petfinder.

hi sharon. I feel like I know you. I have read your stuff on Brat. I am glad that you are getting the word out on Brat. Mabel, My B was adopted from there. I cannot say enough good things about people in that organization. Actually I'm in that organization. We are good people. Mabel's foster was very helpful with helping me understand her behavior. I think a lot of it was due to fact Mabel is an alpha female. Well just thought I would say hi bubsgram94
